Dave,

Don't get me wrong, but from where the choir and cantor were (and many times this is true), the people could not see them. The choir sang the tropars and kondakions and the more difficult pieces, and the cantor read the epistle.

In IC XC,

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai

Father, bless! Thanks for those observations. Our priest says he feels so much lighter (less tired) and less hurried with a deacon present - he can concentrate on the presbyteral prayers without rushing them with the litanies he previously had to take.

I'm confused. I thought the protodeacon was a subdeacon, and I thought that the subdeacon could not lead the litanies, etc. Am I wrong, or have I misinterpreted something in the previous posts?

Protodeacon (first deacon) is an honour of rank amongst Deacons. In the slavic tradition he gets to wear a double Deacons stole and as you see when you see photos of Protodeacons David in the photos from St Elias Church, he also gets to wear a purple kamilavka.

The deacon (not the sub deacon) if present does the litanies. while the Deacon is doing them the Priest has his own particular prayers to say. When there is no deacon the priest has to do them all.

Oh, I get it. Protodeacon as in St. Stepehn, protomartyr. Misunderstanding of that only. So my understanding of the deacon and priest at the litanies is right..phew.
