Are Ethiopian Orthodox in Communion with the Copts and Armenians? Does anyone know of any good websites and/or books on Ethiopian Orthodoxy? Anywhere Ethiopian liturgical music can be obtained. Thank you.

God Bless,

Jeff

Ethiopians are in union with the Copts, Armenians, Eritreans, Syrians, and Indians.

Tough luck trying to find anything about them. I'll look but it's hard.

Musically, check cdnow.com type in ethiopian chant. They should have a cd from the holy land series.

Thank you, Dustin. I found the CD you speak of and will order it. I also found some Coptic Liturgies on there.

God Bless,

Jeff

Try www.samn.com/intro.html [samn.com] for the Coptic monastery of St. Antony in CA they have a bookstore.

Also try www.coptic.net [coptic.net]

An Antiochian parish in Texas has a nearby Ethiopian Orthodox Parish for a neighbor, and when their priest was called away one week, they asked the Antiochian clergy if they could come to their church for Sunday services. And the answer was yes. [I don't know if they received Communion.]

When the Antiochian clergy arrived very early to set up for Orthros, they found the Ethiopians in full prostration in the wee dawn hours, having been there for an undisclosed amount of time...

The Ethiopians, in my opinion, shamed my brethren with their piety! Have you seen their Churches carved out of living rock in Ethiopia by hand??? Their hermits carve a niche out of the wall of the stone church, live in it, die in it, and are sealed back up in it after death... Ethiopia is reportedly the only African nation in which over half the tourist trade is from their own country - Christians on pilgrimages. I think they are an awesome Church!

And you don't hear hardly a peep out of them!

Dear George,

You are absolutely right, Sir!

I once was invited to attend the Ethiopian Sunday Services.

I was asked to show up for 7:00 am which I did.

The Priest was doing the Horologion that led up to the Liturgy.

It was all over by about eleven o'clock or so . . .

Their tradition is mesmerizing to me, their hand crosses, prayer shawls, prayer sticks, special cords for their neck-crosses, their Judaic practices etc.

There are websites on-line that discuss the Ethiopian Church, too many to recount here.

But the best thing is to visit them.

I learned that when you meet an Ethiopian Priest, he hands out the Cross for you to kiss.

After kissing it, we ought to press it to our foreheads.

Alex

Talk about hidden treasures, the Ethiopians certainly are up there! It is truly a majestic and beautiful liturgy. We attend when we can and I also provide lamb to the Ethiopian community from my flock (they have all of my lambs bought up to year in advance!) so we have become close friends with several of them. A loving and Christian people with a rich and full tradition. The priest removes his shoes prior to the Keddase or Liturgy before entering the Holy of Holies, the altar upon which rests the Tabot, or "ark".

I would love to see some English translations of the Ethiopian liturgy and offices. Cardinal Mercier, the famous ecumenist of blessed memory and confrere of Blessed Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, published an English translation of the Keddase but it is long out of print.

And Ethiopian food is incredible. smile

I think that Pope John Paul II should visit Ethiopia.

Except during Lent, where they again shame their Christian brethren with bread, salt and water once or twice a day - It is a test of faith for them... Whereas for us Antiochians, the fast is an effort at healing from our sins...

I gotta get on over to Seattle and attend a service!

Dear Diak,

Yes, I think our Ukrainian community should get back into the habit of having lamb for Easter!

There is a beautiful service of blessing of the Easter lamb in our Trebnyk and cold kolbassa and ham all day can be such a turn-off! smile

Good for you, having your own farming business!

My dad was a beekeeper which is why I think I'm such a honey of a guy! smile

(A sheepish grin right here).

About the Eastern Catholic branches, the Ethiopian Eastern Catholic Church has its own Primate, and recently the Eritrean Church was separated from the Ethiopian one.
These Chuches are independent of the Coptic Patriarchate and the jurisdiction of the Holy see seems to be more direct. However, their Bishops participate in the Coptic Catholic Synod.
