I am constantly castigated by my "media" friends because I refuse to pay money for cable TV or for DishTV. I guess that I am not "media savvy".
My premonition is that Mel Gibson's film will be a very interesting and mind-blowing experience for those who view it; but, as a theologian (diplomaed and all that), I am still convinced that we must first go to the Gospel and to our Church to make sure that we are grounded in the Faith before we see the artistic representation that is given to us by the very talented.
We must remember: Faith comes though baptism as well as through our participation in the community of the baptized, including our priests and bishops. I'd like to hear what our Byzantine Bishops have to say about this before I go to see the film. While their perspective will not be absolutely definitive, I think their perspective would be very important.
As a linguist with 12 languages, I am just tickled to death at a film in Latin (and Aramaic), but I am not willing to be seduced just because of the language issue. Let's see what the producer has offered for our observation and provoking of thought. (And, I LIKE Mel Gibson.)
Blessings!
(Does anyone know where Aramaic is offered in the US besides Harvard?)

Hi Dr. John, Agreed. BTW, the only time we had cable for any extended period of time was when we lived in Athens, OH. Persons living on OUR side of the ridge who had neither cable nor a sattelite dish had half-channel TV sets - Athens Educational Broadcasting in a storm of static. I am interested in the Passion movie (and of course Mel Gibson doth not pain the eyes ) but not the media frenzy. Not having cable means you have so many more opportunities to turn the thing OFF. Cheers, Sharon

Glenn Why don't you all ask the Administrator if he will open a Traditionalist Latin Catholic section of the Byzantine Forum? Or better yet, let's rename the Byzantine Forum to "Traditional Catholics" and just have a one-board "Byzantine Section" like the gift shop at Mt. St. Macrina!!!

Dear Lemko, Now, now - some of our most active UGCC parishioners are former Traditionalist Catholics! Besides, I thought some of you Ruthenians preferred RC's over Ukrainian Catholics. Or anything over UC's . . . Alex

Just a note because some seem confused:
Mel Gibson is prodcuing and directing, not acting in this movie.
Jim Caviezel, most recently having played Dantes in the Count of Mount Cristo, will be playing Christ. He gave a very moving interview on EWTN not long ago. He is a devout Catholic and attended Mass and received Holy Communion daily on set.
In Christ, Subdeacon Lance

It's OK...speak in Slavic or whatever! Latin is cooler. When y'all have a language that was universally spoken and understood from the Sahara Desert to the Scottish border, let us poor simpletons know. Logos Teen
