Same thing here. Will probably most likely stick buy the RSV for study purposes.
I have quickeverse, but recently obtained two excellent CD Roms. Logos and then the Biblia Clerus which was put out by the Vatican. (Yeah you heard right) they are finally comming of age and putting out some excellent materials. But, psssst someone please tell them that the world is not Italian nor for that matter french speaking.
The Biblia Clerus has some wonderful translations of the Bible alone with the Greek, Hebrew and Latin texts.

Fr. Anthony and Fr. Stephanos,

My copy is the RSV, but what is your opinion of the NRSV? There is a New Oxford Annotated New Revised Standard Version available. Seems like I remember reading on this forum some time ago that others didn't think this a good version...not sure of the reasons.

Anyway, my RSV is really old and falling apart..I don't have it here with me (six months in the SW), so may send for another. There are some New Oxford (RSV) available used on line..but most are now NRSV...

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Mary Jo,

I have had only one occasion to use the NRSV with Quickverse a few years back. When I brought the references in on some research I was doing, I was informed by my superior that it is the one version that is not permitted for use in the Orthodox Churches (SCOBA Decree). I was told to go back and either use the RSV or NKJV.

I can not tell you from a critical point of view, but if I get time I will look up what the problem with the NRSV is with regards to the Orthodox Church.

Fr. Anthony,

Good morning. Thanks for this quick reply. That would be most appreciated. I think that the editors or scholars involved may have changed something in the translation. Since the Orthodox have a problem with it...I am thinking so too would the Eastern Catholics.

Bless you. smile

Mary Jo,

The reservations that many have with the NRSV is the inclusive language, especially the Psalms, it is not approved for liturgical purposes in the US(RCC)...though one exception I know of is for the RC Church in Canada...

Hey, James,

That is good to know. I don't like the "inclusive" language mainly because it takes away from the original languages...being a former history teacher too...when they do that kind of revision...I shudder.

And so am sure not going to order or use the NRSV. [Just found the RSV on-line] Can use that. smile Thanks. Bless you.

Just want to thank James here as I have by note for sending the RSV. It is a beautiful copy in fine condition which Ron and I plan to use often.

And, as you probably heard, James, we did get some H2O yesterday but not much.

Bless you,

Mary Jo

Yes have the JB but it is a bit big (like a brick) so I have recently bought a nice much smaller RSV. I like the JB and the footnotes are very handy. I do like the language in the RSV as well.

Our youngest son is dyslexic and colors help him to read. I have been toying with the idea of purchasing one of those 'Rainbow Bibles' for him. I know several Catholics that use them and like them a lot. However, I am not certain of the translation that it is from or is. I have been thinking that the different colors would make it easier for him, a light purple is especially good for the background color. Any thoughts?

What ever works Pani. Is it a Catholic version of the bible? Do what you feel works for your son. You and his father would know plenty about this matter by now. We should ask you for your views here not the other way round. God bless!

I have the JB version of the Bible but it is one of my least favorites. The footnotes are a good resource. As far as reading I would much rather use the Douay-Rheims or King James Version.
I prefer the RSV (this is the one I use for studying although it has its limits when it comes to correct doctrinal understandings) so I supplement it with Catholic/Orthodox sources, have the NRSV (but wouldnt use it as a serious study aid.

Porter,
I still use the RSV (The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha)Ecumenical Study Bible, that is the entire Septuagint.
I do not use the revised one however.
It covers most texts which are used by the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestants.
