I assume that the soul being pierced in this passage is Mary's. Yet, in our adult Bible class last Sunday, someone raised a question. Is the antecedent to the parenthentical "-and a sword will peirce even your own soul-" referring to Mary or Jesus? Since moving I can't find my Liddel/Scott. Very frustrating. Sadly, I've forgotten more Greek than I ever knew.

Dear Professor Dan,

I don't know Greek (it's "Greek" to me!), but I do know that the soul in question is that of Mary.

The Eastern Church has several icons that depict her with swords of sorrow.

The "Seven Sword" icon is a direct reference to Simeon's Prophecy, as it is described.

The RC devotion to the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary is also related.

Ruthenian Orthodox Saints like St Dmitri of Rostov would promote devotion to the Seven Sorrows of our Lady i.e. the Tale of the Five Prayers - and this was based on the Prophecy of Simeon.
