Has anyone here read and meditated on the Commentaries of St. John Chrysostom on Isaiah & Jeremiah? I have his New Testament commentaries in the Nicene and Post-Nicene series, and am curious about his Old Testament commentaries as well.

Old Testament commentaries of the fathers are a lot harder to find in English. I've not read Isaiah or Jeremiah, but I have read Genesis for Chrysostom. These were well worth the time.

I did a quick search of WorldCat and this appears to be the only English version available. There were only 16 translations at all and only four in English. The other three were only on Isaiah 1-8. I've read Hill's translation in the Psalms commentaries on Chrysostom. He is good.

John Chrysostom, Saint d, and Robert C. Hill. St. John Chrysostom Old Testament homilies. Brookline, Mass.: Holy Cross Orthodox Press, 2003.
v. 1. Homilies on Hannah, David, and Saul -- v. 2. Homilies on Isaiah and Jeremiah -- v. 3. Homilies on the obscurity of the Old Testament. Homilies on the Psalms.

The books Steve mentions are available in paperback at www.light-n-life.com [light-n-life.com] , along with other books of homilies on the Old Testament by St. John Chrysostom, including 2 on the Psalms, and the Isaiah & Jeremiah I was wondering about. There is also a daily readings book based on his writings, for those who might be interested.

Thanks, Jim, for the above information. I also searched and couldn't find anything but the site you mention. However, in my search, I did discover where you can order softward of 37 volumes of Early Church Fathers...on one CD. [digital library] for $14.95. It does include some writings by St. John Chrystostom which are listed (not on Isaiah and Jeremiah though), as well as several others. Here's that URL if anyone wants to check out what all this includes.

Mary Jo, come to a service at St. Thomas in Gilbert, if it isn't too far out of your way, and you have the time. It would be good to meet you.

Jim, not coming in your direction on our way down this year. Coming south through CA. and over to Yuma...then Tucson on 8, but want to visit your church and will do sometime. Thanks again for the invite. Ron and I would like to meet you too. Probably in December or January. I'll be sure to p.m. you before we come.

This is a redistribution of the 38 volume English translation of early Church Fathers from the 1850 era. There are no Old Testament commentaries in the about ten volumes of Chrysostom in this collection. In Chrysostom, these are primarily homilies on NT texts that are well worth the read.

The digitizing of these volumes was done as a public service and they are posted on the web in the Christian Classics Etheral Library.
Christian Classics Etheral Library [ccel.org] . Many others have picked them up from here and distribute the collection on CD-Rom.

If you want the convenience of a CD copy I'd suggest getting the version directly from CCEL [ccel.org] as that will support their continued work in making old literature available. This is more expensive, but includes a lot more works and a very good search engine. I've seen a lot of the cheaper repackagers on ebay that don't have the search feature.

You can check the top level of the CCEL site for more on what they have.

I have the 38 volume set Steve mentions, and can confirm what he says about its contents. On sale, it was over $300 new several years ago, and was also available from www.light-n-life.com [light-n-life.com] . The homilies of St. John Chrysostom are truly well worth reading.

Thanks Steve and Jim,

I already sent for the CD I mentioned which can, at least, jump start me to better things. I do want to read the homilies mentioned.

Will see how that goes and maybe get something better later including the book of St. John's commentaries on Isaiah and Jeremiah mentioned above. This CD will be convenient now with me snowbirding to Tucson again soon for six months. Can't haul a lot of books down there. Must have room for four cats and other stuff in our van. And for $14.95. it works for now. smile

Thanks,

Mary Jo
