We have the Orthodox Study Bible at home, and find the notes a great help to Scripture study. Right now, only the New Testament and Psalms are covered, but I hear that the Old Testament volume is in the works. From my family's experience, I would recommend the Orthodox Study Bible...in fact, I think I'll log off the Forum now and do some reading!

Dear Friends,

I understand that Eastern Christians will also read the Gospels and the New Testament as a form of prayer, as Psalms and Akafists are prayed.

One of the Fathers of the Thebaid, as quoted by St John Cassian, said that if we were truly pure in heart, we would have no need of scriptural commentaries.

For then, just as the eye that is unencumbered by dirt and other imperfections can see clearly, so too will the mind that is holy and pure see the plain sense of scripture immediately.

I guess I have a way to go . . .

Do any of you (probably Roman) Catholics have a Fr. Haydock version of the Douay-Rheims? It explains the Catholic punto de vista while refutin Protestant errors, and I believe over 50% of the pages are filled with commentary. I'm sure this isn't popular with Eastern Catholics, so this is geared more toward my Western brothers and sisters.

Dear ChristTeen,

Yes, I have it at home - haven't unpacked it yet.

It is an excellent text and I know Orthodox who use its Psalms and who tell me there is no better English translation available.

It is very readable.

I once visited and venerated the tomb of the Servant of God, Richard Challoner. FYI.

Anyone have a clue as to when the Scott Hahn study Bible is coming out? I've been sitting on pins and needles waiting for it for over a year.

Abba Isidore the Priest:
When I was younger and remained in my cell I set no limit to prayer; the night was for me as much the time of prayer as the day.

Yes Alex your totally right, it's pricey but I wouldn't say overpriced....I am so happy that you honored me with your 6000 post wink ...what no fanfare?

As to Odo's question....who knows. I do know that Dr. Hahn has only been teaching one class the last two semesters, so he's probably working on it as we speak, though he is writing another book right now on the Our Father.

Ignatius Press seems to be taking a Byzantine Liturgical view towards publishing this study bible....just like when you are at a byzantine liturgy the priest starts the "final prayers" and that was like an hour ago so Ignatius keeps saying "by Christmas time" and that was like three Christmasses ago. wink wink

God Bless!

Dear Bonaventure,

Yes, I've been trying to suggest fanfare and the like to our Administrator for some time now smile smile

This thread has given me a new insight into how scripture is an integral part of prayer, and is prayer insofar as it involves a direct conversation with God etc.

I feel like dancing on my desk right now!

Alex
