If a girl for the one in the oven, we shall name her Seraphima (has much meaning to us), though my parents are resistant--that is too bad. They have become too American, and are loosing many of the old ways they handed down to me. Everyone else loves the name, especially our friend, Seraphima. If the child is a boy, we will name a saint's name close to the birthdate. (Josaphat would be a candidate, so would Athanasius-of Brest).

Great names, Adam. May God bless you and your wife with a good delivery and a healthy child.

Alex: Thanks for the suggestion. I may pursue this.

Dear Ghazar,

The Book of Joseph and Aseneth is truly beautiful - and I have no doubt but that it is a worthy deuterocanonical OT Book!

Would you know how St Aseneth is commemorated in the Armenian Church, date of commemoration, or even services/liturgical mention?

The Roman Calendar commemorates St Joseph and his sons SS Ephraim and Manasses and Aseneth on February 5th. Interestingly, BOTH wives of Jacob the Patriarch are commemorated on that day too - Rachel and Leah.

I'm still looking into this question, Orthodox Catholic. I'll be sure to post if I find anything out. We have one feast for all the OT Patriarchs. I suppose this, by extension, might include their wives.

Dear Ghazar,

Happily, Jacob's concubines aren't listed in the calendar . . .

But I haven't yet checked with the Assyrians wink

Dear Ghazar,

Just a note to say that I've found out that Righteous Joseph the Beautiful, Son of Jacob, is venerated in the Byzantine tradition as the patron of new homes.

We had a thread on this earlier, and I assumed that since some Western Catholics honour St Joseph the Betrothed as a patron of new homes, this was the same "Joseph" in the East since a prayer service is served in honour of "St Joseph" when one takes possession of a new home.

But this St Joseph is the Old Testament one and is connected with St Asaneth as in the marriage rite.

St Ephrem the Syrian also wrote a sermon on Righteous Joseph the Beautiful in which he reflects unwritten tradition.

He states that after Joseph became Governor of Egypt, Potiphar became very afraid of him. But Potiphar's wife confessed to her husband that it was she who turned Joseph in falsely. She then told Potiphar that Joseph was so holy and pure that he would forgive him if he came to prostrate himself before him now.

Potiphar did so and Joseph did not punish him.

Re: The Jerusalem Bible and commentary

Alex, I did a Amazon.com search and it seems this is the best Jerusalem Bible currently being published.

What do you think? Is this the best one available?

Thanks,

Dear Brad,

I'm going to have to order a copy and see!

(They should give you a kick-back for bringing them customers!)
