Just now watching WGN's telecast of Midnight Mass in Chicago. Cardinal Francis George is the main celebrant. Also present in the procession and sitting up in the sanctuary area are representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. I think it was an Archbishop...perhaps someone is watching and knows...

A wild and crazy guess?
His book We are all brothers is a great read!
I am just now sinking my teeth into it. You could open it to any page and learn something.

Christ is Born!Archimandrite Gregory wins the donuts. He may collect them at my house anytime this week or wait until I visit Maine in the spring and collect them there. I missed the beginning of the Mass but saw everything after the Responsorial Psalm. It was awesome and once again exampled the beauty of the Latin Church. The atmosphere was Spirit-filled, the choir and people sang prayerfully and joyously. At the end His Eminence, Francis Cardinal George, introduced and welcomed His Eminence, Archbishop Vsevolod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Archdiocese of Chicago, Patriarchate of Constantinople. I also noted that when the deacon incensed the cardinal he also incensed Archbishop Vsevolod in an identical manner (which is according to the appropriate protocol).

Glorify Him!
We left to go to our parish's Midnight Mass about the time of the Responsorial Psalm...so thanks for filling me in on the rest. I must agree that the service seemed very well done.
Just thinking of another thread we had recently...I guess Archbishop Vsevolod didn't have a Midnight Divine Liturgy of his own to go to. Perhaps if the Latins have Midnight Mass they can invite Orthodox and if Orthodox have Midnight Pascha services they can invite the Latins?

Dear All: After my immediate family and I attended the Vigil Mass at 6pm, one of 3 in our own parish Church, we repaired to the "clan" gathering at the house of the family's "Patriarch" for the traditional "Noche Buena." While enjoying the food (and drinks), we "concelebrated" the Midnight Mass offered by our good Archbishop of Chicago, His Eminence, Francis Cardinal George, broadcast by WGN Channel 9. I was pointing out to all that the other Archbishop must be the Ukrainian CATHOLIC bishop of Chicago and nobody, but nobody, ever corrected me. Understandably, Filipino, Irish, Sri Lankan, Japanese, and Chinese Roman Catholics (except me ) knew what I was talking about. At any rate, the Mignight Mass at the Holy Name Cathedral was just as awesome as the Vigil Mass we attended, which was celebrated by an African priest, possibly Nigerian, and was partly sung! And many thanks for the participation of Archbishop Vsevolod of the Ukrainian ORTHODOX Church of Chicago, EP! (Now, if Hal could also chime in?) AmdG

Anybody in Chicago, attend Christmas Mass at St. John Cantius? Midnight or Vigil?
I attended Midnight Mass at St Agnes here in St. Paul. Four priests, a deacon on the Altar, with Monsignor directing the Chorale, and a couple priests singing up there in the Choir loft. That's what I call a Midnight Mass!

Is it possible that the good Archbishop is on the old calendar, and happened to be free for the evening?

Before I got involved in the parish I now belong to, I very much loved going to Midnight mass. But my Byzantine parish had me going from 9PM (choir warmup) until just about midnight with the Christmas vigil, I was too pooped to try a midnight mass. But I do think that Saint John Cantius parish should televise. I would also like to see an Anglican Use parish televise. Perhaps some day?... Michael durn, I had a taste for donuts too!

Attention Michael and anyone else in Chicagoland who may like donuts - assuming that Ss Volodymyr and Olha are still in the food business, one can obtain excellent Ukrainian donuts from them (for a small consideration) along with varennyky and borsch. Happy Christmas (round 1) to all! Incognitus

I was at St John Cantius for Midnight Mass 4 years ago, and it was amazing. Standing room only, and it must have taken over half an hour for Holy Communion. Without a doubt SJC has the most devoted congregation in the entire Chicago Archdiocese.

Christ is born! Glorify Him!
Several notes:
(1) Archbishop Vsevolod is on the Old Calendar, as is most of the South Bound Brook Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolia. But there isn't a midnight observance at either his cathedral or at Ss. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church on Superior Street (which is also on the old calendar)...at least, there wasn't when I left Chicago in 2001. Several times, the men of the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's in the Loop sang Christmas Matins (in Ukrainian, of course) at Sts. V&O.
(2) For many years, the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's in the Loop sang Vespers four times a year and Tenebrae in Holy Week at St. John Cantius in Chicago. It is an amazing place.
