Dear Teen:
May I interrupt to ask if you might translate the prayer for us poor un-Latin-learned Latins?
(Try saying THAT ten times fast!)

Dear LatinTrad., +May the LORD and His Most Blessed Mother watch over you and protect you! I will have our monastic community begin praying for you beginning today (Friday, Nov. 14th) IF you will send me by e-mail (Archimandrite@aol.com) your Christian name. In the Eastern Churches we always pray for everyone BY NAME following the Holy Scriptural admonition: "...And He called them each by name." So please just e-mail me your Christian name (no family name necessary) and we'll begin to remember you daily in our poor prayers...especially to the Most Holy Mother of God, asking her to pray with us to her beloved Son, Our Blessed Lord!

In His great love for us,
+Father Archimandrite Gregory

Yes, of course, C of S! It comes from the Stabat Mater and reads, in English:

"I wish to stand near the cross with you, to share willingly in the lamentation."

This is however the translation that most of us 'older folks' are use to...and love til this day! biggrin

English:

At the cross her station keeping,
Mary stood in sorrow weeping
When her Son was crucified.

While she waited in her anguish,
Seeing Christ in torment languish,
Bitter sorrow pierced her heart.

With what pain and desolation,
With what noble resignation,
Mary watched her dying Son.

Ever patient in her yearning
Though her tear-filled eyes were burning,
Mary gazed upon her Son.

Who, that sorrow contemplating,
On that passion meditating,
Would not share the Virgin's grief?

Christ she saw, for our salvation,
Scourged with cruel acclamation,
Bruised and beaten by the rod.

Christ she saw with life-blood failing,
All her anguish unavailing,
Saw him breathe his very last.

Mary, fount of love's devotion,
Let me share with true emotion
All the sorrow you endured.

Virgin, ever interceding,
Hear me in my fervent pleading:
Fire me with your love of Christ.

Mother, may this prayer be granted:
That Christ's love may be implanted
In the depths of my poor soul.

At the cross, your sorrow sharing,
All your grief and torment bearing,
Let me stand and mourn with you.

Fairest maid of all creation,
Queen of hope and consolation,
Let me feel your grief sublime.

Virgin, in your love befriend me,
At the Judgement Day defend me.
Help me by your constant prayer.

Saviour, when my life shall leave me,
Through your mother's prayers
receive me
With the fruits of victory.

Virgin of all virgins blest!
Listen to my fond request:
Let me share your grief divine

Let me, to my latest breath,
In my body bear the death
Of your dying Son divine.

Wounded with His every wound,
Steep my soul till it has swooned
In His very Blood away.

Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
Lest in flames I burn and die,
In His awe-full judgement day.

Savior, when my life shall leave me,
Through your mother's prayers
receive me
With the fruits of victory.

While my body here decays
May my soul your goodness praise,
Safe in heaven eternally. Amen Alleliua.

The Collegeville Hymnal
Minnesota: Liturgical Press, 1990.

In Latin:

Stabat Mater dolorsa
Juxta Crucem lacrimsa,
Dum pendbat Filius.

Cujus nimam gemntem,
Contristtam et dolntem,
Pertransivit gladius.

O quam tristis et afflicta
Fuit illa benedicta
Mater Unigniti!

Quae maerbat, et dolbat,
Pia Mater, dum vidbat
Nati poenas inclyti.

Quis est homo, qui non fleret,
Matrem Christi si vidret
In tanto supplicio?

Quis non posset contristri,
Christi Matrem contemplri
Dolntem cum Filio?

Pro pecctis suae gentis
Vidit Jesum in tormntis,
Et flagllis sbditum.

Vidit suum dulcem natum
Morindo desoltum,
Dum emst spritum.

Eja mater, fons amris,
Me sentre vim dolris
Fac, ut tecum lgeam.

Fac, ut rdeat cor meum
In amndo Christum Deum,
Ut sibi complceam.

Sancta Mater, istud agas
Crucifixi fige plagas
Cordi meo vlide.

Tui nati vulnerti,
Tam dignti pro me pati,
Poenas mecum dvide.

Fac me tecum pie flere,
Crucifixo condolre,
Donec ego vxero.

Juxta Crucem tecum stare,
Et me tibi socire

In planctu desdero.

Virgo vrginum praeclra,
Mihi jam non sis amra:
Fac me tecum plngere.

Fac, ut portem Christi mortem,
Passinis fac consrtem,
Et plagas reclere.

Fac me plagis vulnerri,
Fac me Cruce inebriri,
Et cru re Flii.

Flammis ne urar succnsus,
Per te, Virgo, sim defnsus
In die judcii.

Christe, cum sit hinc exre
Da per Matrem me venre

Ad palmam victriae.

Quando corpus moritur,
Fac, ut nimae dontur
Paradsi glria. Amen. Allelja.

Or if you are from a less liturgical parish...say, an Irish parish...this might sound more familar to you (and it IS beautiful too!)

STABAT MATER

At the cross, her station keeping,
Stood the mournful Mother weeping,
Close to Jesus to the last.

Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
All His bitter anguish bearing,
Now at length the sword had pass'd.

Oh, how sad and sore distress'd
Was that Mother highly blest
Of the sole-begotten One !

Christ above in torment hangs.
She beneath beholds the pangs
Of her dying glorious Son.

Is there one who would not weep,
Whelm'd in miseries so deep
Christ's dear Mother to behold ?

Can the human heart refrain
From partaking in her pain,
In that Mother's pain untold?

Bruis'd, derided, curs'd, defil'd
She beheld her tender child
All with bloody scourges rent.

For the sins of His own nation
Saw Him hang in desolation
Till His spirit forth He sent.

O thou Mother! fount of love!
Touch my spirit from above.
Make my heart with thine accord.

Make me feel as thou hast felt.
Make my soul to glow and melt
With the love of Christ our Lord.

Holy Mother! pierce me through.
In my heart each wound renew
Of my Saviour crucified.

Let me share with thee His pain
Who for all my sins was slain,
Who for me in torments died.

Let me mingle tears with thee,
Mourning Him who mourn'd for me
All the days that I may live.

By the cross with thee to stay,
There with thee to weep and pray
Is all I ask of thee to give.

Virgin of all virgins best
Listen to my fond request
Let me share thy grief divine.

Let me, to my latest breath
In my body bear the death
Of that dying Son of thine.

Wounded with His every wound,
Steep my soul till it hath swoon'd
In His very blood away.

Be to me, O Virgin, nigh
Lest in flames I burn and die
In His awful Judgment day.

Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
Be Thy Mother my defence,
Be Thy cross my victory.

While my body here decays
May my soul Thy goodness praise
Safe in Paradise with Thee.

Amen.

In Her most loving arms,
+Father Archimandrite Gregory

To listen to a version of the Stabat Mater...just put in this web address:

http://www.cyberhymnal.org/ (also good for MANY MANY hundreds of old favorite hymns both Catholic and Protestant)...then click on 'TITLES' and then on 'A'---scroll down to 'AT THE CROSS HER STATION KEEPING'! Enjoy!

In Her maternal care,

Isn't that the refrain song sung during the "Stations of the Cross"? When our churches were heavily Latinized back in the 1970's, we would always sing parts of that hymn during the Friday Evening "Stations".

Dear Latin Trad;
Please tell us how you are and if you are any closer to peace and resolution of this crisis.
Philomena (the one on Earth with me) still prays for you. Philomena in Heaven assuredly does too (if my family and I have anything to say about it!)

Ken H, you da man--so's your daughter (in a different sense though wink ).

With caution, I can now state that the news is good. As the novena to St. Philomena went on--as well as all the prayers from the Byzcath people--the situation gradually improved, and is now almost there. Almost.

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your prayers--Unity in Christ and Unity in Christ's mom, Ken H and his daughter, Alex with his rosaries, Archimandrite Gregory, Mor Ephrem (went out for coffee the other night), Brian, BOB, Steve (InAwe), Rose, Jakub, Dolly, Anhelyna, Tammy, Teen, Herbigny, Ung, Andrew Rub, and, most of all, Communion of Saints (got all the emails!)--thank you all so much. I remember you all to the most holy Theotokos and ever-Virgin Mary.

God bless you all. May His Will be done!

In Christ,

LatinTrad
