As beautiful as Pope Benedict's Inauguration was, the ceremonies did not reflect the universality of the Church. The Byzantine Rite -largest Rite of the Eastern Catholic Church - had no place at the altar. The two lungs - Eastern and Western - that +Pope John Paul the Great of Blessed Memory often spoke of were not even symbolically represented at the altar. Wouldn't it have been appropriate for at least a Byzantine icon of Jesus to have adorned the sanctuary?

Hopefully, our new Pope will have a heart-to-heart talk with the Masters of Ceremonies so that the Byzantine Rite will be conspicuously present at future ceremonies.
P.S. I feel better already just having the opportunity to ventilate.

Hang on - I have just seen the start of the Video - and unless I am terribly mistaken the Gospel was chanted by a Greek Catholic Deacon.

Yes, the Gospel was proclaimed twice. Once in Latin by a Roman Deacon and once in Greek by a Greek-Byzantine Catholic deacon and the proper responses sung by the Greek Seminarian choir.

And there were Eastern concelebrants, the Maronite Patriarch for one.

I thought the East was well represented.

Moreover, the Holy Father chanted the blessing before the Gospel in Greek, to Byzantine chant. And after the imposition of the pallium, the Greek choir sang a quite pleasant polychronion. The Greek deacon seemed to be in evidence throughout the Mass.

Those with sharp eyes may have noticed on the reverse side of the Pope's precious mitre, the Kyiv Oranta icon of the Mother of God is delicately embroidered.

I likewise thought the East was well-represented in this liturgy.

As I watched only a small part of the Liturgy, I appreciate the posts made about Eastern representation.

Thank you.

I also thought the East was well-represented during the Mass. In fact, I thought it was a big step, which seems to set the tone for Pope Benedixt XVI's pontificate. We are hopeful for a reunification of Catholics and Orthodox.

How I wish he was coronated with the tiara and carried on the sedia gestatoria!

Yes, it's too bad that those were dispensed by Pope Paul VI. The Papal Tiara would have been something to see for us who've never witnessed the coronation.

Too bad we didn't have the Papal Oath!

Thus, some will say the seat is still vacant. frown

There is probably a kinescope recording or a cinema film of the coronation of Blessed John XXIII, and the coronation of Pope Paul VI. Can some enterprising person or group arrange to have these made available, like on DVD?

Regarding today's celebration: there were a striking number of visible Orthodox representatives. I wonder where they celebrated Palm Sunday.
