Photius,

I'm sorry for the confusion, my post was not directed at you. I merely copied your comment about French cuffs, and posed a rhetorical question. Instead of "If you look...", I should have written, "If one looks..."

Were the clothing police there to make sure you wore the right color of mantilla? Being Byzantine, I never knew there was a color code. I'd have been kicked out for sure.

If memory serves, only 2 female royals--Catholic of course--are allowed what is called "le privilege du blanc" when in audience with the Pope. I believe this pertains to the female sovereigns of Luxembourg and Lichenstein. All others are supposed to be veiled in black.

Thanks for the info. If I'm ever granted the privilege of a Papal Audience (ha! in my dreams!) I'll be sure not to make the faux pas of wearing white! LOL!

Why did Patriarch Sfeir read in Latin??? Couldn't he read his part in Syriac? Is it obligatory to do so in Latin?

Mexican,

As he was concelebrating in the Latin Rite, he was obliged to conform to the usage of the Rite.

Many years,

Neil

For those who are interested in diplomatic protocol, any Catholic queen, eg, Queen Sophia of Spain, and the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg are entitled to le privilege du blanc (cf James-Charles Noonan, Jr.,The Church Visible).

The new Pope Benedict XVI looks so holy, kind and humble that my greatest wish would be to kiss his holy hand and receive his blessing...I guess I just might have to do that vicariously through our beloved brother, Alex!

"My experience is that most Westerners do not like Eastern music at first hearing, and some even find it "dreadful" or "painful"; I love it, but this is my experience in trying to share it with Western friends."
-------------------------------------------------------

Dear Photios,

I know that Eastern music is something one must be raised with. Having been nurtured in Greek music, one of my greatest pleasure is listening to the calls for prayers from Middle Eastern minarets.

It kills me to watch people in that part of the world dancing, etc. on TV, with the announcer's talking and not allowing us to hear an 'ounce' of their beautiful music. What a pity! But then again, what a pity that we can't all be raised in all cultures and with all languages, enjoying all our Lord has given us.

Oh, and how I wish that my computor was able to listen to the music on the sites you posted.

Some people on the Byzantine Forum were complaining about the quality of the St. Peter's choirs that sang doing the funeral liturgy of Pope JPII. As Eastern Catholics who are not accustomed to hearing Roman liturgies and Western music, it is hard to make such rash judgements. I actually enjoyed the choirs who sang at the funeral liturgy, especially because it was sung in
Latin, a liturgical language that isn't used that much, especially hear in the U.S. It is the same for Roman Catholics listening to Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic liturgical music, they also shouldn't make judgements on first impressions.

The reference was not to all Eastern liturgical music, because many, including Ruthenians, Ukrainians, and Russians, use diotonic music.

Wishing you and all a joyous Pascha,
Photius, Reader and sinner
