Dear Lord, somehwere right now there is a man who shall be the next pope. Please have mercy on him and help him to prepare. Please also have mercy on the cardinals as they prepare to select the next pope. Please, may Your will be done in the selection of the next pope and in his reign. And please have mercy on the whole Church. Amen.

Heart of Divine Mercy also have pity upon this poor sinner whose sins would blot out the sun, hear his pleas as he joins your son John in asking for assistance for the Church's next Universalis Papae. But also as he pleads for mercy for those who have already upped their campaign of slander upon the last Pope now that he has been laid to rest. May their hears be converted to your truth and may the scales fall from their eyes before your beautiful face.
My Lord...
Strengthen and galvanise your entire family against the storm upon the horizon. Pour out your power of perseverance over us all for that time when those outside realise the next Pontiff cannot and will not change our apostolic traditions. Give us words with which to speak that our not our own and wisdom that is folly to the wise of the world.
Lord and master of life place hot coal upon the lips of this wicked and lazy servant who deserves nothing more than to be thrown out into the street where there is weeping and gnasing of teeth. Purge the mouths and minds of all of the entire faithful so that we may speak as Isias did of the wonders which are to come through you.
Having sent your beloved servant John Paul the Great to sow the seeds of the New Evangelisation please Lord make the seed sprout up even as we sleep, though we know not how. Moreover, those you use for this mission by your beloved Providence, I beg of you let them not come to you at the last days saying 'did we not prophesy and make miracles in your name?' only for you to turn from them as evil dooers.
Son of David, have mercy on us, and fill us with humility that we might enter into your rest.
Amen, Amen, Amen.

For the College of Cardinals: That they may be open in heart and mind to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we pray to the Lord:
Lord hear our prayer.
For an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the conclave in Rome: That through intense prayer and genuine discernment, the Cardinals may listen to the Spirit's guidance, we pray to the Lord:
Lord hear our prayer.
For the Catholic Church: That in faith and confidence we may be united as we await the Spirit's action in the election of a new Pope, we pray to the Lord:
Lord hear our prayer.

My prayer life needs work. I am going to pray these intentions for nine days (novena) anticpating the conclave to elect a new pope.
(Oooops!, I missed two days. Holy Trinity and the Theotokos help me make it up!)
a sinner in need of a shepherd,
Paul

And if the new Pope wants something to do immediately, there is always the acknowledgement of the patriarchate of the Ukrainian Catholic Church! That is, unless the next Pope is Lubomyr Husar, in which case that will be a foregone conclusion. Alex

Dear Gaudior,
Some have been saying they want a pope who would be the opposite to the dynamic John Paul the Great.
Husar can be that pope, and so could others. And the focus could still be on Eastern Europe . . .
Did you know that John Paul II's mother was Ukrainian?
The Ukrainian network from Kyiv interviewed two of the pope's Ukrainian cousins via his mother who live in Ternopil in western Ukraine!

Dear Alex,
But of course I knew that the Pope's mother was Ukrainian!
As to the Pat. Lubomyr becoming pope...well...Podai, Hospody!
Gaudior, in prayer

Three things struck me about this article by His Eminence Cardinal Husar: This experience has inoculated Husar against obsession with ecclesiastical honors, since he knows that often the most faithful servants are the least decorated. He never walks around in ecclesiastical finery if he can help it; often he wears a gray shirt and a pair of suspenders that would look more at home in a general store or a barbers shop than a chancery. I'll let him off for this one because he sounds like such an exemplary pastor. Its just we in the West often have less than fond experiences of priests who dont like to wear Cassocks... Husar is refreshingly candid. I asked him about the current state of relations between the Catholic church and the Orthodox. No project has been more ballyhooed in recent years of John Pauls pontificate.
Herewith Husars sober diagnosis: The situation does not look very good, he said. To my mind, there is no real desire for unity, even on our side to some extent.
Husar explained that the Catholic church remains unwilling to adopt the structural reforms, above all in favor of local autonomy, necessary for reunion to be a realistic option.
As for the Orthodox, Husar said that a Bolshevik-era psychology of fear and suspicion make it impossible to trust anybody.
When we look at these people today, they are good people, and they wish good for themselves and their children, Husar said. But they have been so maltreated by that system that they are victims of it. Before we can talk about unity, this generation has to die out. It is a sad truth, but it is the fact. I can see the logic of this position. Although I think Rome should keep a tight rein over the local churches under her own immediate jurdistiction as Western Patriarch, we need to loosen the apron strings over the Easterns. Indeed, there is barely any desire for unity between East and West and its probable as he Patriarch says that a generation will need to go to their graves before we can really begin to talk unity. I come from a priestly family, and I remember that my grandfather had to write to Rome to ask permission to grow a beard, Husar said. Really, Im not joking. This sort of thing is ridiculous and must be reformed.
An example from the present: Husars synod elected an auxiliary bishop almost two years ago, and they are still waiting for confirmation from Rome.
This does not assure the quality of candidates, it simply creates another layer of bureaucracy, he said. We being on the spot, knowing the person first-hand, can judge much better. I'm starting to really appreciate what Cardinal Ratzinger meant when he spoke of bureaucratic reforms in his ecclesiological primer 'Called to Communion'. Permission to grow a beard, that is ridiculous.

O Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life, descend upon our Cardinals and envelop them with your wisdom in the days to come as they reflect back on Pope John Paul II's pontificate and think ahead of choosing the Servant of the Servants of your pilgrim Church!
