Do we not believe that a person who dies during Bright Week enters right into Heaven? (as if we doubt Pope John Paul 2 would be anywhere else?

Sam, I haven't heard this before. Can you tell me any more about it?

Well Byz, I'm cetainly not the expert but...here goes my explanation:

The celebration of Pascha- Christ's resurrection and truimph over sin and death, extends through the next week, called "Bright Week", which ends tomorrow or Sunday (?).

St. John Chrysostom tells us "Let no one weep for his transgressions, for forgiveness hath dawned from the tomb. Let no one fear death, for the death of the Saviour hath set us free."

It is a belief that because of Christ's Resurrection/triumph over sin that anyone who dies during Bright Week is freed from their sin and accompanying 'punishment' and is taken to Heaven.

Today is the feast of the Life Giving Spring in some Orthodox churches I think.

Corrections welcomed from anyone who knows more than I !

Sam

Here is a link to a very touching account of the latest news - Vatican: Pope John Paul II Is Near Death, by Victor L. Simpson [apnews.myway.com] .

I don't know why but of all the news stories I've read, this one really struck me - this Victor Simpson is an excellent reporter, don't you agree?

I went to mass today we have the portrait of Pope John Paul 2 at the altar. It was a very moving homily of the gospel today about 153 fish. The priest said, the 153 fish symbolize of the 153 different kinds of fish. He said , today Catholic and non-Catholics are united praying for JP II. It was a very moving homily. When I entered the Church I was crying after seeing the porpriat of the Great John Paul II ...I thought he left us already. GOD BLESS THE PAPA....VIVA LA PAPA.

And God bless you too, Randy - the next few days are going to be a very emotional time for all of us. It is wrenchingly sad to lose this Pope and yet, think about where he's going - and what a welcome he's going to receive when he gets there! We are Christians. We should rejoice with him as well as mourn for him.

And make no mistake - it will also be very exciting. All the beauty, pageantry and majesty of our universal Church will be on display for the world to see. And God willing, it's something you won't see again for many, many more years. So savor the experience.

(Sorry to sound like an old lady dispensing wisdom to the youngsters .. I suspect it'll only get worse as the years go by. wink )

Aloha Auntie and very much Mahalo for the wisdom. I think I might be staying over my computer most night waiting.... for that emotional moment.

I know it is going to be very emotional for the next hour or so.... We will miss him the great pontiff of our time.

Dear Dolly:

Should I consider myself lucky for having experienced the last 4 conclaves (although I was very young during the conclave that elected Pope John XXIII) or should I just admit that you, yourself, are a "youngster" as far as I am concerned?

Amado

P.S. I am watching the special Mass being offered by your Cardinal Mahoney for the Holy Father being broadcast live on ABCNews/now, courtesy of sbc/yahoo/dsl.

Dear Randy:

If you have a dsl.sbc.yahoo browser, ABC News Now has been broadcasting 24/7 the condition of the Holy Father.

Right now a Special Vigil at St. Peter's square of more than 50,000 is being broadcast in streaming video worldwide!

The condition of Pope John Paul II is being updated every few minutes.
