I highly recommend the book "Mount Athos: Renewal in Paradise" (320 pages, Oct 2002) by Graham Speake. It tells the history of each monastery on the peninsula and the recent revival and changes. It is up to date and fascinating.

Dear Cantor Joseph,
We should all read that book especially since the monastic tradition of Rus' has its roots in Athos where the original cave of St Anthony of the Caves Lavra is still to be seen, above which is a Church of all Saints of the Lavra.
And St Panteleimon's is the great Athonite monastery of Rus' with its St Elias Skete where St Paisius Velichkovsky made his podvigs along with untold numbers of Kozaks.
Thank you!
Alex

Dear, in Christ, Alex,
Is there a good history (in English) of the monastery of the Kiev caves, or lives of the founders?

Thank you for the information on a new book on Mt. Athos -- Oct. 2002. My question is: Do you know who publishes it? Either the name of the company or their web site?
Thank you in advance for the help!

Thank you in advance for the help! I got this info from Amazon.com. I first saw it at a local Borders bookstore, which I will probably return to purchase it. Hardcover: 320 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 1.00 x 9.50 x 6.50 Publisher: Yale Univ Pr; (October 1, 2002) ISBN: 0300093535 It is a fun book to read. Hard to put down. The numbers of new monastics and building projects (and restoration) is positive. Joe

Hi, OrthoMan first posted this in June of 2002, but that addy is expired. So I did a search and found it here. You have to scroll about 1/4 the way down and you will see a pitcure of the Moon over the Monastery of the Cave in Keiv. It is so awesome to behold. However, since this page is photos from World Press, they will not leave you unmoved. Wheter it is facing the discomforts and tragedies of this world or the beauty of some of the photos. But all the photos are excellent. http://picpage.blogspot.com/2002_09_01_picpage_archive.html Rose

Father, Bless!
The English translation I am familiar with is the Paterik of the Kievan Caves translated by Muriel Heppell. This is Volume I of the Harvard Library of Early Ukrainian Literature. I believe she wrote this in the late 1980s.
This is printed by Harvard University Press who also printed Father Borys Gudziak's master work Crisis and Reform about the the Union of Brest.
