Kyiv, January 24, Interfax - Ukraine's Greek-Catholic Church, also known as the Uniate Church, has prohibited its priests from running for legislatures at all levels, a spokesman for the head of the Greek-Catholic Church Lyubomyr Guzar announced Monday.

Priests were allowed to run in the previous elections with the permission of bishops, but that experience proved negative, the spokesman said.

I've spoken to many Russian immigrants here, trying to get a handle on whats going on 'there' and what I've basically found is that the Uniates are viewed as a minority religion who can't make up their minds where they want to be. Unfortunately I believe most Catholics see us the same way, if they care to see us at all.

Dear Sam,

And your point is . . . ? wink

The article above did NOT actually call us "uniates" but "Greek-Catholics" and only made a reference to the FACT that there are those who do indeed call us "uniates."

I don't know the answer to that. It's like those who continually spell the name of the capital city of Ukraine as "Kiev" to the chagrin of Ukies.

I've also met Orthodox priests who use the term "uniate" in a very respectful way and see nothing wrong with it, even if we ask them NOT to use it.

Again, very much like those who use "Kiev . . ."
wink

Ok, Lost&Found,
Not nit-picking but where does it mention Russia?
Kyiv is the capitol of the Ukraine (which has been independent for approx. 16 years now).

I think it's because it's Interfax. Notice the English translation does say Kyiv.

I honestly had no idea until I came to this site that people found the word offensive. You see it all over the place in historical sources, including non Orthodox ones.

Dear Pyrohy and Andrew,

Andrew is correct. Since this is Interfax, I consider this a Russian report, same as if it were MSNBC, then I would consider that an American report.

That is the basis for my comment.

Thank you.

Cool. I wasn't being critical, I was just seeing if I myself read wrong.

What is wrong with spelling the English name for that city as Kiev. I also call the country Ukraine and the one next door to it Poland. I dont call that country Polska. They should not be telling others what to call them. What ever next the Germans will be demanding that we call their country Deutschland.

Oh and the point of the thread. Nearly forgot. This is nothing more than a reminder that Catholic clergy are expected by the whole church to stay out of politics and leave that to the laity. Some may recall Pope John-Paul II telling a priest off in Central America who was in the government of his country.

Dear Pavel,

So you insist on "Kiev" do you?

Well then, you, sir, are a . . . wholly well-rounded gentleman!

Dear Kobzar,

But for those characters, if politics didn't mix with religion, it would be like eating pirozhki without a dip of any kind! smile

Dear Pavel,

Not at all - "well rounded" in the "educated, cultured" sense!! smile smile

I myself once had quite the spare tire around my middle, like the Administrator . . . (I'm in trouble now!).

Diabetes took care of that . . .

But my dad used to say that those with a paunch were often urged to go into the Priesthood and the paunch itself was called a "Deacon's calling." (With apologies to Fr. Deacon Lance, but I made no mention of any "ritual prayers" here! wink ).

The paunch is probably from all that motionless standing during the Church services . . . smile

Which makes me wonder why all the royal doors in the old Rusyn wooden churches were so small and narrow? biggrin
