My wife's paternal grandparents were from what is now Slovakia. I have been unable to find the villages associated with her family via internet map sources. One of the cantors at church knew Usgorod (Ungvar), but that's a larger town, now in Ukraine. I am trying to locate information on the following villages believed to be in current day Slovakia: Velka Lodina, Mala Lodina, and Kokosovce. My wife's great-grandparents were married in the Greek Catholic Church in Rusa Nova (Vova?) Res. Any help would be appreciated.

Jim,

Ruska Nova Ves is a village next door to Presov (just east a kilometer or two) on the north bank of the Delnja River. Ruska Nova Ves means "Rusyn New Town" and salt mining was heavy in this area. It was in Saris County, Nyznotoroyskyj District. Its coordinates are 4859'00" (or 48.983)N, 2120'00" (or 21.333)E. The Zbojnicky castle from the 13th century was located here. The Greek Catholics living there were/are primarily 'Slovak' Greek Catholics and not Rusyns. Does this site help? http://members.aol.com/mjhirko/Ruska_Nova_Ves.html

I hope this link works. It shows a map section of Slovakia depicting the location of Ruska Nova Ves and Kokosovce:

Also, check out the following link if you want to find the latitude and longitude of any Slovak village/town/city:
http://www.heavens-above.com/select...lo c=Unspecified&TZ=CET [heavens-above.com]

Kokosovce's coordinates are 4857'00"N, 2120'00"E (or 48.950 21.333). It is 3.7 km from Ruska Nova Ves. You can see it on the map link given above.

Mala Lodina is at 4853'00"N, 2108'00"E (or 48.883 21.133). Velka Lodina is at 4852'00"N, 2110'00"E (or 48.867 21.167) and is 3.1 km from Mala Lodina. Velka Lodina might have gotten a name change, but it does register as a current town in present-day Slovakia. Mala Lodina is just west of center between Presov in the north and Kosice in the south. Here is a map showing Mala Lodina:
http://mapy.zoznam.sk/browser.pcgi?M=1&Z=2&X=60&Y=24&a20.x=7&a20.y=62

We are almost cousins. The 'Thurs' came from Kojsov, a Rusyn town just SW of Mala Lodina. See Slovak map link given above. My great-grandfather was born in Kojsov and married a 'Pinchak' from Gelnica (also shown on map), a heavily German town.

For a 'primer' on latitude and longitude coordinates, see:

What was her great-grandparents surname who got married in Ruska Nova Ves?

Cantor Joe Thur
