As a Scotch-Irish/WASPy American, I'm endlessly confused about eastern Europe. I've read a lot of books but I'm still confused.

First, what is the "the Ukraine" thing? I know it's offensive but I'm not sure why. Is this just an english thing?

Second, does anyone have any good sources they can recommend that would explain the history of Ukraine?

While I'm sure our Ukrainian brothers and sisters here will have much more to say, I've found this website [infoukes.com] helpful in explaining why "The Ukraine" is wrong.

The web page referenced by Mikey is right on and requires no elaboration.

As for a source, there are two general histories published by The University of Toronto Press. The first is Orest Subtelny's "Ukraine - A History." It's long, but ultimately readable.

Paul Robert Magosci presents the issue in more of a textbook form.

Both can be purchased from yevshan.com

Cheers!
