I will be attending St. Stephen's in Phoenix tomorrow with my parents. If anyone from the Forum is there and wants to say "hi", just look for the 3 slightly bewildered looking folks in the very last pew! (I look pretty much like the photo in my profile, just a little blonder.)

Good for you!

I am not from Arizona but I wish you well. Have your parents been to a Byzantine parish before?

Have a great time with the folks in the House of the Lord!

Michael

No, my parents have never been to an Eastern rite church before, so I've been impressing them with my newfound knowledge (hastily looking things up here, just in case!).

We drove by the church this afternoon and my mom noticed an interesting house nearby for sale, a "fixer upper", I believe the diplomatic phrase is. She says she'll buy it for me, if she wins the Power Ball (lottery) tonight!

Great! Be sure to tell them that if they like, you can find 20 more different kinds of Catholic churches you all could visit together. It's a beautiful thing!

Well good luck then!

I'm pleased to report that they really seemed to like it. Everyone at St. Stephen's was very friendly and welcoming, and my dad especially seems interested in learning more about Eastern spirituality - when I left to go home, he was halfway through a book called "Light from the East" which I'd picked up for him at the bookstore!

This is the first time in a long time we've found a church to attend together that we all liked! So I think in my future visits to Phoenix we'll definitely be going to St. Stephen's! Thanks to everyone there for making us feel so at home. smile

I'm pleased to hear that you and your parents enjoyed worshipping with our community. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to meet you. While you where in Phoenix, I was assisting Fr Mike at the Cathedral. The Cathedral parish was quite welcoming to me and my family as well. After celebrating with a deacon after so many years, Fr Mike is no doubt anxious for Michael Mina to finish his formation. wink

Hope to see you next time you are in Phoenix.

Dear Theist Doll,

Light from the East? Is that by Henry Hill? He lives not too far from me . . .

Do you mean you were at the Cathedral of St. Mary's in Sherman Oaks? That's where I usually go! Gee whiz, it's a small world ... uh, at least, it's a small church!

Sorry, I gave the incorrect name, and had to go to Google to find it! It's called "Light of the East: A Guide to Eastern Catholicism for Western Catholics," by Monsignor George Appleyard - here's a link with a full description: http://saintthomastheapostle.org/review_of_light_of_the_east.html

It's an excellent book; I highly recommend it if you're trying to explain the Eastern Churches to someone who's never encountered them before - very simple, informative and easy to read.

(By the way, check out my Avatar - it's a clue to my other secret Web identity!)

You're actually half right! Okay, I'll end the suspense -- (you're welcome!) -- I'm aka "Chrissy the Stooges Woman" - http://www.angelfire.com/ca4/stoogelovers/

Dear Dolly,

O.K., now what do I have to do for you to end the suspense here?

St Stephen is a wonderful parish. When we lived in Arizona we'd attend St Stephen on occasion. My kids were much younger then and they had a different criterion for evaluating parishes. They always got excited about the goodies after liturgy. I still remember pulling into the parking lot of St Stephen and my 4 year old daughter saying excitedly: "Oh! The donut church!" smile

Another great parish to visit in Arizona is St Thomas Byzantine Catholic in Gilbert (near Mesa, AZ). Even if you cannot arrange to stop by for Liturgy do try to see the iconography inside. Oh yeah, my kids' evaluation of St Thomas was good, also. They referred to the fellowship time after liturgy as: "the church after the singing." wink
