Dear Friends,

Just a recap of yesterday's ordination of Fr. Geoffrey Korz.

He was ordained at Christ the Saviour OCA parish on Follis Avenue in Toronto at the hands of Bishop Seraphim (a four hour long, wonderful service!).

A deacon was also ordained and an Archpriest received the "palitsa."

(I also heard the bell rung 12 times during the Creed and the ripidia used extensively, just like at St Elias' wink ).

His Grace Vladyka Seraphim is clearly a "people person."

He smiles and is at ease with himself, putting everyone else around him at ease.

For his sermon, he walked to the middle of the church where most of the people were and asked why they weren't up at the front, before the iconostasis? ("I've mentioned this to you all three times now!")

His smile is warm and his style is affectionate.

During the ordination, he stood with Fr. Korz at the Royal Doors, holding up the vestments while singing "Axios!"

And then, at the end, Fr. Korz's Presbytera, Linda, came up and offered the Bishop her husband's new pectoral Cross which the bishop blessed and placed on Fr. Geoffrey.

As Fr. Korz walked away to the back, the Bishop looked at the people and gave a wonderful, holy smile of contentment and satisfaction! smile

As I went up to congratulate Fr. Korz, he introduced me personally to the Bishop and said, "This is the man who brought me to Orthodoxy!"

Bishop Seraphim said "what a surprise . . ."

(Since I'm not Orthodox, I thought it truly was too smile ).

I wore an icon pin of St Seraphim of Sarov, Vladyka's episcopal Patron and Vladyka blessed my Lestovka that he recognized as St Seraphim's form of the prayer rope.

I've known the Reverend Father Geoffrey Korz for some years now and I know how hard he worked and how much he struggled to see the blessed day of his priestly ordination.

I've never seen him so happy, giving Communion for example and raising the Chalice so people could kiss the edge etc.

He also looked terrific in his priestly robes with the hooded Epitrachelion and the beautiful Orthodox pectoral Cross his dear Presbytera gave him.

Coming from a strong Evangelical Christian tradition, Fr. Korz brings with him a solid grounding in the Scriptures and a very strong Biblical sense of Christian ethics and morality.

Many, many years of service in the Vineyard of Christ to the Reverend Father Geoffrey Korz and Presbytera Linda!

Mnogaya Lyeta!

Thanks for the beautiful report of Fr. Geoffrey's ordination, Alex.

My OCA priest, a native-born Russian from Tula, also *always* wears his podriasnik (cassock) in public, and, whenever I've been to the rectory, he was wearing it there too. He does not wear clergy shirts and clerical collar tabs--never that I've seen anyway. In dress and manner, he could be easily confused with a ROCOR priest (even with the "pony-tail" and beard)--indeed, I've heard that the ROCOR hopes he becomes dissatisfied with the OCA because they want him!

Glad that you were taken with Vladyka Seraphim. My wife, younger son and I met him at his cathedral in Ottawa some years ago, and he seemed "one of the people" there too. At Vigil he sang with the choir on the cliros, but the next day at Divine Liturgy he served in full pontificals just as naturally as he had been the evening before. A real "people's bishop!"

Dear OrthodoxEast,

Truly He is Risen!

Yes, a great bishop and you are lucky to have such a leader - all of Orthodoxy is!

I'll never forget that smile he gave all of us immediately following Fr. Geoffrey's ordination - he was beaming from ear to ear!

And as he was blessing the people, he then turned and said, "And one other thing . . . the Choir did a great job and I want to acknowledge that!"

And his blessing to me was very meaningful and moved me practically to tears.

I knew he wasn't one of those bishops appointed by Rome . . . smile

Alex,

Question!

I thought it was proper orthodox practice to have only one ordination per liturgy.

Ordination of a priest and a deacon is two? Is it not?

As for the third thing, an Archpriest receiveing the "palitsa."..... What is a palitsa?

Dear David,

I don't know - perhaps Fr. Thomas or another of our Orthodox posters could answer your first question.

The "palitsa" is like the epigonation, a square, white piece with a sling that is worn over the left shoulder and comes down like a "knee-guard" to the lower right.

The Archpriest receiving was "on loan" to the Belarusyan Orthodox and could not be present for the Liturgy.

So he was blessed with the Palitsa in his black cassock and the Bishop remarked to everyone, "Sorry it looks funny . . ." wink

Alex,

You mentioned using a Lestovka. Where did you get it? I have tried to find one to no avail.

Ordinations at an Orthodox Divine Liturgy: only *one* presbyter and *one* deacon may be ordained. NOT two (or more) presbyters or deacons. Sometimes, if two bishops are concelebrating, each will ordain one priest and one deacon.

The shop in Erie sells good suede lestovky. I once had a wonderful lestovka - and podruchnik - sent from Alaska, but lost the address of the parishoner.

Bless me a sinner, Father Mark,

I once had prayer beads that were seeds on a string.

They "grew" on me in more ways than one . . . wink

The All-Merciful Lord bless you Alex!

Did Father like the presents and is he being a good boy and wearing the poyas?

Bless me a sinner, Father Mark,

I haven't spoken to him since Sunday and gave him his gift bag just as I left . . .

I'm going to make it a point to see him soon.

One thing though - he is a great friend but he keeps telling me to become Orthodox smile .

I think that is none of his business, but what do you think I should do?

What if someone wanted you to become a Nikonian, what would you say . . .? wink

Alex,
With your use of " smile " its hard to tell if this really bothers you but....

If I was in your shoes I would do one of two things....

1) Talk to him seriously about this and let him know how it bothers you and if he insists on continuing this you will no longer be able to talk to him

2) As he tells you become Orthodox, you counter with telling him to return to Rome!

David wink
