The Devil and the Preachers Vocation

The following is from a routine of the late Flip Wilson regarding a conversation between a preacher and his wife. It seems that every time the preachers wife went out she would succumb to temptation and buy a new dress or hat usually at a steep price. One day she came home with yet another dress and the preacher blew his top. The wifes reply was, The devil made me do it! The preacher questioning how the devil seems to only tempt her when she is out alone to buy things got a step by step on how the devil tempted her and forced her to buy these things.

Finally the preacher asked, How is it that when the Devil tempts you, you always come home with something new, what has he done for me? The wifes reply was this, I asked the devil just that, and his reply was I have done something for your husband. If it was not for me, your husband wouldnt have a job!

How's that for an analogy in relation to our vocation as Christians?

You perhaps have heard about the non believing husband and the strict Baptist wife. Nothing he did to please her ever seemed to work so he had a Byzantine tattoo enscribed on his back. Thinking this would please her it instead enraged her. She beat him to a bloody pulp and threw him out of the house.

BTW I couldn't find anything about this in Snopes so it could be true. Then again...

Dear Father Anthony,

That was very funny...it brought back memories of Flip Wilson who I had completely forgotten about.

As we are the same age, (29-if anyone is wondering :p ), I am sure that you will remember that his skits about 'the devil made me do it' were very popular! biggrin

Alice,

Are you saying we follow the same way of calculating birthdays as Jack Benny biggrin ?

Yes, Alice, I too remember Flip Wilson's famous saying... even though like Jack Benny (as Fr. Anthony relates) I celebrate my 39th birthday every spring... :p biggrin :p

I feel sorry for those younguns who never knew Jack Benney, or George Burns and Gracie Allen, or Groucho Marx, etc. I've been 39 now for 20 years. My Mother-in-law has been 39 for much much longer, though. So her memories are filled with even more of the gentle humor of days gone by.

Dan- That is from a story by Flannery O'Connor, though I don't think she specifies the wife is Baptist.
I don't recall offhand the name of the story...

Daniel,

Thank you for that. I simply must spend some time with Flannery O'Conner. I don't know why I didn't a long time ago.

I say:

Hey I even remember a show called 'Fibber McGee and Molly', and 'Amos and Andy'. Then there was 'Charlie MacCarthy' (the wooden brother to a famous movie star)...radio was just great. But Jack Benny and George Burns and Gracie Allen were really the tops on TV...that is except for 'Lucy'.

Those were the days, but let's not forget Bob Hope. I believe his wife gave all his jokes to the Congressional library. All 60,000 of them. They can be found on the computor you know?

Yes, but just think about it. You could actually date your neice's friends and not be ashamed. biggrin biggrin

On a similar note, my mother was the seventh child and a "miracle" child. She had a neice that changed her diaper! Now that is weird!!! lol

Also, my mom did Jack Benny minus. She started counting back at 39. She is now only 6 years old.
