As some of you will remember, I take a great interest in the controversy surrounding Pope Pius XII, whom I consider one of the great heros of the 20th century. I admire someone who in the 1930's referred to the Nazis as "false prophets with the pride of Lucifer."

I will look for this book, and I recommend Rabbi David Dalin's book "The Myth of Hitler's Pope" which also deals with many contemporary themes.

Never fall for the simplifications of Pius XII's critics, whose works, as New Yorkers might say, "have more errors than an early Mets game."

Mark,

Are you sure this quote was not from Pope Pius XI as he was the one who condemned Nazism and Fascism in several encyclicals such a "Mit Brennender Sorge"??

Did you see where the Vatican has not opened the archives to his work?

The following was posted on CNA concerning this matter.

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai

As with a few Papal Encyclicals, some are written by "ghost writers" the ghost writer of Mit Brennender Sorge was Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli, he was to become Pope Pius XII.

Also, most if not all, Papal Encyclicals are written in Latin. The above encyclical was written in German, especially against the Nazi regime.

In an open letter dated 12 March 1935 to Cardinal Schulte of Cologne, Papal Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli, the future Pope Pius XII, labeled the Nazis as "false prophets with the pride of Lucifer."

The following month in a speech in Lourdes, he described the Nazis as "possessed by the superstition of race and blood."

I take these quotes from Sister Margherita Marchione's book "Shepherd of Souls: A Pictorial Life of Pius XII."
