In Andrzej Zieba's 1989 article from the Toronto Seminar in Ukrainian Studies, "National majority-religious minority: Polish Greek Catholics in the 20th century" I learned about the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Society of Detroit, established by Frank Kmietowicz and Stanislaw Dryja- Lisiecki. Zieba states that that group established a monastery in Ujkowice near Przemysl in 1987, but encountered hostility from local Roman and Greek Catholics. There were two monks, raised in the Latin rite & Zieba implies that they may have become Orthodox.
Does anyone know about the Detroit group? Are they still active?

Dan and Chtec,
Thanks for the links.
Unfortunately, the sites don't mention the Detroit group. I wonder if they are still active.

Stojgniev, Did you look at this page? http://www.monasterujkowice.pl/index.htm?wydawnictwa/historia/5.htm I don't really read Polish, but I see the men you mentioned, Detroit, and the "brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius" (bractwa św. Cyryla i Metodego) listed there. Perhaps it has the information you're looking for? Dave

Dave,
Yes, thanks, you are right. It turns out the two men from Detroit are the founders of the monastery. It's an interesting story, too bad it's not translated to English. I wish I had time to do that. It's a sad story, though, & implies that all Polish Roman Catholics are hostile towards Eastern Christianity, though that has certainly not been my experience.
