McCartney: John's Christ comment was misunderstood

Rocker Paul McCartney has defended John Lennon's controversial statement that The Beatles were "bigger" than Jesus Christ, insisting his words were misinterpreted.

Lennon - who was assassinated in New York in December 1980 - unleashed his infamous comments during an interview with newspaper The London Evening Standard in 1966, sparking outrage among religious groups.

But McCartney claims his bandmate's now legendary words were not an example of his arrogance - instead they reflected his concern for the decreasing number of church-goers in Britain.

He says: "Of course, John never meant to say that The Beatles were literally bigger than Christ.

"He was only referring to the lack of attendance in the church. He was actually taking a sympathetic point of view."

Dear Pani Rose, I think we must speak up when people mock Our Lord. One of my bosses at my secular job made the comment,"Jesus Christ was a stand -up comic." I told him to take it easy and then added,"If you had said something derogatory about Mohammed in the presence of a Moslem employee, you would definitely lose your job.Depending on the zeal of the Moslem, you might even lose youur life."The other person who heard the remar was an Irish ("Orange") Protestant like the boss and a liberal to boot. However, she too felt that he had stepped over the line with that remark. At least he did apologise.

Fr. Al,

I agree. I just reread that article and realized I didn't comment. I think the statement John made is just as true as the one Madonna made stating she whould be better known than the Blessed Mother. That statement at the beginning of her shannigans let us have an idea of where she was headed. Both of these statements are extremely prideful. Maybe looking now Paul sees it differently. But,I think back then, with their envolvment in eastern relegions , meditation and such, it was probably a true statement.

One thing for sure about that statement, ONLY GOD KNOWS FOR SURE! wink
