This article is from Asia News. It may be that the Orthodox Church in China may get a lift.

Russian Orthodox Church to be set up in Beijing shortly [asianews.it]

This is good news. I've always wondered why Russian Orthodoxy didn't have any progress in the conversion of China.

Do not be too impressed.

Stamford, Jul. 10, 2006 (CNA) - A U.S.-based human rights group is calling on the Olympic Committee to cancel the Olympic Games in China after government officials arrested yet another Catholic bishop, while he was recovering in the hospital.

Joseph Kung, the president of the Cardinal Kung Foundation, said the games in China should be canceled in order to preserve [the] good name and spirit of the international sports event.

Bishop Jia Zhiguo, Roman Catholic bishop of the underground Diocese of Zheng Ding in Hebei Province, was arrested on June 25th, while he was still recovering from an operation. Medical staff reported that the bishop, in fact, still had a catheter in place when he was taken.

On the morning of June 25, the government authority informed the nursing staff at the local hospital that a car was being sent to take the 72-year-old bishop to his home in Wu Qiu, where he cares for about 100 handicapped orphans.

When his faithful noticed that their bishop had not returned, they inquired about the delay at the governments religious bureau. The religious bureau told them the bishop had been sent for "education" for several days.

To date, there has been no word on the bishop and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Cumulatively, Bishop Jia has been jailed for nearly 20 years of his 26 year episcopacy. According to the Cardinal Kung Foundation, this is the ninth time he has been arrested since January 2004. . . .

...........................................

. . . Those who wish to remain faithful to the Roman Catholic Church must practice in secret. Currently, all of the 45 bishops of the underground Roman Catholic Church are either in jail, under house arrest, under strict surveillance, or in hiding.

In his December 1996 message to China, Pope John Paul II described the underground Church as "a precious jewel of the Catholic Church."

I meant that Russia is geographically closer to China than Rome.

Dr Eric,

I would not be too quick in making summations. Until the Cultural revolution, the Orthodox Church in China had gained autonomous status from the Church of Russia. After that with the flight of emigres and the persecutions of the indigenous population, the church quickly waned. For more of a background I refer you to the the following website: Orthodoxy in China. [orthodox.cn]

I need to articulate myself better. shocked Over the last 1000 years, why hasn't Russian Orthodoxy taken more of a hold? It seems that no one can crack into the Chinese people, but I would venture that the Russians would have the best chance as they are geographically closer.

Dr Eric,

You need to read a few of the articles on the history to understand why Christianity has such a difficult time in China. That is why I posted the website.

Russia has not been next door to China for the past 1000 yrs. Russia annexed Siberia and other territories gradually and China proper is well away from the nothern borders over deserts, mountains and steppe.

It will be interesting to see if an active church flushes out some secret Orthodox Christians in the capital. Of course it is not quiet the same as a church opened on Chinese territory but it is a step in the right direction.

Actually the last Chinese Orthodox priest in Beijing, reposed only within the past year. He and his congregation were not afforded status to hold services in a church which was confiscated. There is still a group of faithful there.

Ray,

As I told Dr Eric, read and you will find it is not a one paragraph answer.
