Here is a story about Pope John Paul II.

When we lived in Alaska in 1980 Pope John Paul II came to visit in Anchorage. There was a liturgical service downtown in the city park where thousands came from all over Alaska.

Before this liturgy in the park Pope John Paul II made a stop to go down to the basement of one of the old Catholic Cathedral downtown to greet the retarded and handicapped. My friend's frail, handicapped, six year old daughter, who had cystic fibrosis, had been selected to present a bouquet of for-get-me-nots(the Alaska State Flower) to the Holy Father. He took them and was so sweet to her.

A few years later he returned to Alaska and this time to Fairbanks. He had heard this little girl had died because one of the nuns wrote him a letter about it. Then he told the people in Fairbanks that he remembered the little girl who gave him the for-get-me-not flowers. He said to the crowd there: "I will never forget that little girl nor will I ever forget the people of Alaska."

Brings joy to my heart to share this story.

That is awesome Mary Jo!

Today our oldest son said he realizes now how having the opportunity to see him twice changed his life. I remember sending him to Denver. He got home from two weeks at Scout camp and the next day we placed him kicking and screaming on a bus going to Denver. Now is wonderful to hear that the trip was worth it.

Also, my husband and William saw him in New Orleans. Said it was pouring rain, all sorts of people around just to see what was happening. Well the rain would not stop and those people left (some guy had on cut offs that were totally embarrasing to everyone around) they were really glad he left. Anyway, the Pope came out and raised his hands and the rain stopped that fast. My husband said it was awesome.

Pani Rose,

Yes, I heard how great that youth conference was in Denver. My son was so inspired after he went with me to see the Pope at the Liturgy in the Park in Anchorage in 1980 that he ran in the "Race for Rome" ( a fundraiser to send an Alaskan choir to Rome at the Pope's invitation) and he won the race earning $200. for the cause. He is 39 now and I can't help but think he is remembering -

Blessings,

smile Mary Jo
