How can we know how to vote if we don't know how the property got into the hands of the Israelis? Did they buy the land or are they leasing it? The Patriarch has stated that he doesn't know what happened and denies responsibility. How are we supposed to vote when those issues are not resolved?

Dan L Well I know that a link was provided on the original post, but I will put a couple in here for you and others. Plus here and there quotes from the articles. Jerusalem Patriarch must go, says Palestinian Authority diplomat [ news.yahoo.com] A Greek diplomatic source told AFP Monday that a Greek foreign ministry delegation sent to Jerusalem last week to help investigate the land sale controversy is preparing a report noting Patriarch Irineos I's failure to give useful information.
"The report will not be a positive one for Irineos, because he did not collaborate at all," the source said. "He did not provide the documents that were requested (by the Greek delegation)... and the report will reflect that." Patriarch Hazim: Selling church lands in Jerusalem unacceptable [ arabicnews.com] Patriarch Ignace IV Hazim of Antioch and All East for the Roman Orthodox declared that any selling of lands that belong to the Orthodox Church in Jerusalem is unacceptable as they are endowments and nobody has a right to decide their status. Jerusalem patriarch accused by ex-aide of offering to buy his election [ news.yahoo.com] ATHENS (AFP) - The embattled Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem allegedly offered 400,000 dollars (300,000 euros) to a convicted drug dealer in order to secure his election in 2001, a Greek newspaper reported. Greek Orthodox leaders seek Jerusalem patriarch\'s resignation [ cnews.canoe.ca] Arab leaders of the Greek Orthodox church in the Holy Land on Saturday called for the resignation of Patriarch Eireneos following a report that he was involved in a land deal transferring sensitive Jerusalem property to Jewish control. We all know that there is tension between the Greeks and the Palestinians - have been for ages. However, it seems that people are quick to condemn the Patriarch without actual proof being offered. Besides, it would not be the first time that a leading churchman has been conned, if indeed this was the case.
More surprisingly is the interference of the Antiochian Patriarch in this affair. Again, we know that the late Patriarch Diodorus was highly critical of the Church of Antioch and its percevied deviations from orthodoxy (I remember that there is a letter doing the rounds somewhere on the internet). Also, Patriarch Ignatius has always had peculiar relations with the other Apostolic Patriarchs...perhaps he believes that if an Arab was elected to the See of St James he would have an ally against the Greeks?
All in all...not a good position to be in for anyone during Lent...
Anton
