Very good article...the smoke to me is secular modernity...the Church via Vat II was not ready for the onslaught...that fissure was akin to a dam or levee that had burst...mind you, this is only regarding the Western Church...

The flood is receding and revealing the damage...but there is much work and a great burden for the ones who want to address it...

Yes, I agree with Fr. Amorth, the evil one has his agents in many places...
