Glory to Jesus Christ!

What a weekend I had. On Thursday I found the phone number of my old high school sweetheart from Texas and attempted to call her. No answer and no voicemail. Friday a friend and I left for a weekend in Washington DC. On the way traffic stopped and a guy hit me. When I pulled forward we found that there were only 2 scratches on my car. Only his car had expensive damage! My bumper just popped back out! My back has hurt for a few days though, as I saw the accident coming and stiffened up. Oops! :-(

Saturday we went to the National Basillica and spent a good part of the day there. we also went to the Pope John Paul II Center. A fun place for kids, but not great. The chapel was a modernist monstrosity. We also went to a Fransiscan Monastery and viewed their stations & museum.

Sunday we went to a Tridentine Low Mass at Old Saint Mary's and then to a Divine Liturgy at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family. My Roman Rite friends were astonished at the chant and noted that it was like being in heaven. I HIGHLY reccomend anyone visiting DC go to the 9:30 English Liturgy there. A link to the site is on the portal page of http://YourCatholic.com

After that we attended a Polish National Catholic Mass at the National Cathedral. It was like a conservative Novus Ordo with a few better translations and the priest facing east with the people. We also viewed the Cathedral while an Anglican "service" was going on. Later that day I visited Christendom, A Catholic College in Virginia.

Monday we returned and on the way stopped at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes. Nice place. We also drive by the St. Anthony Shrine & St. Ann Seton Shrine. When I got home I found an email from my old high school sweetheart. She had been looking around online and found me and wanted to see what I was up to.

Interesting and ironic weekend, eh? Now I need to get caught up on my lack of sleep and take some pain meds! God Bless!

Dear Nik,

Accidents like that can leave one with lingering back problems - I know and you should have it checked out.

But with all the excitement, especially with your sweetheart (what does she think of beards? My significant other says they tickle!), your back has really been up against the wall.

I'm about to go start some heavy preparation for next week, so I'm getting in all the fun I can right now!

Alex

yes, I have always loved the National SHRINE. (many people mistake it for a Cathedral). The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Washington is St. Mathew's Where Pres. Kennedy was buried from.

A woman runs an Icon and Book shop from her home down the street from the Franciscan Monastery. Nice grounds. I haven't gone to the Shrine of the Holy Family yet. I hope to do so next trip. Good to hear about your trip. We have so much in the East Coast. I missed it all when I lived in Seattle. Not much there. Of course, if I had my choice, I 'd rather live in Rome, but ah well....

And half a block from Icon and Book Service is the little Ukrainian Catholic Studite monastery of the Holy Cross, where Hegumen Joseph (Lee) resides. They were formerly Carpatho-Russian Orthodox.

Dear Friends,

My understanding is that the Ikon and Book Service is part of the Holy Cross Monastery, how they earn their daily bread. Also, not far away is the Ukrainian shrine of the Holy Family and next to that, St. Josaphat Seminary.

Have a Blessed Day!!!!
