Dear Zenovia,

You could be right... who's to say that Demi Moore isn't at least part Greek? And that website certainly could have mistaken in identifying Calista Flockhart's grandmother as her great-grandmother. I'm just going by what I read. wink

Of course, if one goes by looks alone, I certainly pass for Greek, though I'm not at all (take a look at my profile pic, and you'll see why people at St. George come up to me and address me in Greek, ha).

God bless,

Karen

Dear Karen,

You are so pretty and adorable that Greeks would be proud to have you as one of their own. Can we adopt you? smile

BTW, Zenovia (the other talkative Greek) posted the post you were referring to, not moi. wink

Fondest regards,
Alice

Aw, thanks Alice! I'm not Greek, but the Greek people I know won't believe me!

And yeah, I noticed that it was Zenovia and not you... I just woke up and am caffienating myself as we speak (or write, ha).

God bless,

Karen

Dr. Eric,

I've seen blue-eyed Greeks. Jennifer Anistassakis (I mean, Aniston) is half Greek, and her eyes are blue... of course, she could have gotten those from her non-Greek mother...

There are some TV personalities that are Greek. Two practicing Orthodox one's are Nick Gregory the meteoroligist (weatherman on TV in NYC), whose father was a priest. I remember him when he was a child...he was adorable. Also the NYC anchor man Ernie Anastos' grandfather was a priest. I gather they inherited their pleasant voices from the priests in their families.

Bob Costas is half Greek, but I don't know if he is a practicing Orthodox, and Jonathan Serris of CNN has a last name and looks that were quite common in my mother island. It seems he's changed his name lately, so it's not 'ethnically' Greek anymore. In a case like that, it's highly doubtful that he would be a practicing Orthodox. frown

Karen,

It seems some sites say here last name was Anistonopoulos (just Google that name and see), while others say Anastassakis. confused confused I don't know!

As far as Calista Flockhart, she is one-eighth Greek, therefore named after her great-grandmother, who is her closest Greek relative.

As for Bob Costas, he has an Irish Catholic mother and was raised Roman Catholic himself. I think he practices.

Now that is a generalization!

The majority of my family and my husband's family have either hazel, green or blue eyes. I have green eyes, my husband has green eyes, our daughter has blue eyes, but my son has brown eyes...and the only close relative we can think of that he could have taken after is my father in law, who also has brown eyes.

So, you have Yugoslavian blood! Was your grandfather Orthodox? confused

Alice
The hazel eyes thing was responding to Zenovia's comment about only seeing them in Greeks.

I assume that my great-grandpa Niklic was Orthodox because of being from either Serbia or Kosovo. He actually left his entire family (wife and kids!) over there and came to America never to go back! shocked

He married my great-grandma and they moved to Southern Illinois and from what I can tell became Lutherans (even though my great-grandma was baptized Catholic.)

I really wonder about that side, I know my mom's side is Irish and I've even been to the places where they are from in County Cork. But I know very little about my Slavic roots. frown

I'm just a mutt wink

But did you eat mutton on Pascha? This may indicate your roots. wink

Dear Friends,

As I was driving to college today to submit my final grades, I saw a large poster with Tom Hanks to promote that disgusting movie . . .

Would he agree to star in a film promoting the abuse of women - of course not! Or any number of other politically correct causes . . .

But this blasphemous and offensive thing - that is O.K.!

And if he believes in the book, then he truly is, and not only portrays, the character of Forrest Gump.

(To me, that sounds like something one might step in while out on a walk in the woods . . .)

I think Demi Moore looks Irish, personally, and her last name would seem to confirm that.

Actually, come to think of it, I think quite a few members of the Irish race look a lot like Greeks and vice versa. Is that just me?

Actually:

What I meant is that the part of the eye that determines the color, (forgot it's name), tends to be two different shades in Greeks with light eyes. Sometimes the outer part will be brown and the inner blue, grey or green, or visa versa. Well I always thought that Demi Moore had blue eyes and was quite shocked to find that the outer part of her eye was one shade, and the inner part another.

Of course it might be common in other people too. I really don't know. confused

On the subject of Greek entertainers, when I was about 14 and learning to play guitar, I became a big fan (AND STILL AM) of the Anglo-Greek folk singer Cat Stevens (Stephen Demetre Georgiou) Ironically, Stevens has said in interviews that from his Cypriot background he inherited some negative feelings about Islam. Strangely however, after nearly drowning in 1977, Stevens embraced Islam, and has taken the name Yusuf Islam.
