Okay, I am new not only to the forum but to the internet. Can anyone tell me in simple, step by step terms, how to change the little picture that accompanies my posts? There is an icon [in the Byzantine, not the techno, sense] that I'd like to use that I found on another site and I don't know how to do it...I noticed that Alex just changed his image. If you're not offended by my recent attempts at humor perhaps you can help?

Hello Daniel n,
If you should find an image that you like (and is an appropriate size) right-click on the image. There should be a box with options appearing including something like "save image location". Select that option and the location (address) will be on your clipboard.

You can now go into the profile section and and select the link for "select a different Avatar". at the bottom of the page will be a place for you to paste-in the URL (address) that you had saved earlier.

If you are using a Macintosh (like I do) the cursor needs to be pressed and HELD on the image to bring up your options. Just select "copy image location" and the computer will have that URL on the clipboard. smile

Some people change their image much too often and it's annoying, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE PEOPLE! wink

Pray for them, it's an obsessive-compulsive thing.

Michael

Dear Daniel,

To me it seems that no matter how long we have been surfing the internet it is new all the time. There is always something new to explore, some knowlege to learn, and friends from all cornors of the earth yet to be met.

So just go for it! and enjoy...just don't tread where Jesus wouldn't go.

Daniel,

Some of us who are not computer savvy and insisted on having an Avatar that we could not find on the interet , solved the problem.

I scanned the Icon I wanted and then e-mailed it to the Administrator and asked for his help - and voila - my Avatar of "Our Lady Joy of all Joys" biggrin

Thanks Michael, but as you can see, I didn't pull it off. I right-clicked and there was a thing that said "save picture", which I did and it put it in "my pictures" and then I went back to my profile but couldn't figure out how to access "my pictures" nor how to "paste it". Man, I couldn't even find the paste or the scissors.
Let me be clear: I am a recently lapsed Luddite and REALLY ignorant. Could you try it again, speaking slowly? Think of it as explaining it to an Amishman, or more specifically, a retarded Amishman. Thanks.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Hi Daniel,
The clipboard is an area in memory, almost like an imaginery place, so that when you copy something, the information (possibly an image, or some DATA, or an address) is held there temporarily. If the power went off, you'd lose it.

So what you want to do is temporarily copy that information (the address) and drop it into a place where you need it, in this case the place for it in your profile.

It appears that you have a windows machine, when you right-click it should (hopefully) give you more options, You don't want to save the image, just the location of the image. This is an address that the bulletin board program will go to itself, and retrieve the image.

In other words, if the website you find this image on changes it's look, you might not have your image anymore because the program has to go and get it.

As a test, you could try copying an image location and pasting it to a blank document just to see what it looks like.

It should look something like this:

https://www.byzcath.org/Faith-and-Worship/Monk06.gif

If you were to copy that URL above and paste it into the avatar sheet in your profile you would get an image because the BB program would go looking for it.

Remember to select "save image location" (or whatever equivelant phrase) and not "save image"
because it will copy the picture instead.

+T+

One additional point, most of the current computers will allow you to paste by doing a right-click. After you click where the info should go, try a right-click, a little option box will appear and if something is already on the clipboard it will have "paste" as one of the options. Slide your arrow over that PASTE option and release. At least that way you don't have to hunt for the paste button!

Another way to paste is to hit control-V on the keyboard, at least it works for me!

Good luck and let me know if you need more help.

In Christ
Michael

No luck. Rather humiliating, as I asked you to explain it to a retarded Amishman and I still don't have a clue. I do have Windows and there is no place like "save image location" when I right click. If anyone has windows maybe they can explain it to me, bearing in mind that I seem to be slower than a retarded Amishman...

OK it's not your fault, I have been misleading you. From a computer at work (which has windows) I get the same result. You need to click on properties, at the bottom of the list.

The URL for that picture should appear there, highlight it and copy (use control-C for convenience).

Be sure to get the whole URL, sometimes they are so long that they go into two lines.

Then you can paste that URL anywhere, like on a blank word document or email just to see if you got it. I would use control-V to paste.

If you right-click on my avatar, you will see a URL that looks like this in properties:

http://www.exarchat.cz/js_cerkva.gif

As far as I know, the browser will take that address and look for my avatar, then post it.

Try a couple of different images, some will not be copiable if they are part of some big image or link. I am an amateur myself so I'm not surprised that I confused you.

Hope that helps

Michael

Rats. I am befuddled. I almost had it, I think, by copying longhand the URL and then trying to insert it into the place on my profile update but I lost it by clicking the wrong button or something and then when I went back to the profile update it wouldn't let me on to the avatar image change thing; apparently you get one attempt per day..
None of the things you say, Michael, seem to apply to my machine, but bear in mind that my latest assessment of my technical capacity is that I am more like a comatose Amishman.

Well, there's always tomorrow!

Besides, this is nothing, crafting intelligent sustianable arguments here is the hard part.

In my opinion, you have nothing to worry about.

I keep trying and failing. There is this really great icon I want to use...
When I get back to the profile update how do I then access my images?
I tried typing in the URL and pushing the "set url " button but nothing happens. I am really low tech and this is depressing.
