Dear Ray, Oh, the shame of it all! Mentioning Hershey in the same posting as . . . I can't do it. But to offer you a graduated program of repentance, you may start with a Lindt bar of no less than 70%.

Incognitus Hi Incognitus - Ghana is 80% - and it's very very smoooooooth. I have tried another brand that was 88% - and it just did nothing for me the taste was all wrong - and yet I can't say why As well as the Ghana one at 80% Lindt did 2 others - but sorry I can't remember what they were - we tried the Ghana and enjoyed it so much we didn't even try the other two. Oh the spotted hound loved the Ghana too :p

Haven't found the Ghana in Knoxville, but keep my own stocks of Lindt Excellence which is 70%. The French can't be all bad if they produce Lindt. Some folks have wine cellars. I have a chocolate bin.

Lindt is good but Neihaus or Leonidas is divine! Their dark chocolate truffles are to die for. I generally will pick up a kilo for myself and guests when I am Belgium. Remember from someone who is half Belgian and holds a Belgian passport, why settle for Lindt, when even Godiva and Cote d'Or sells dark chocolate bars that leave them in the dust. Please do not be sacriligious and mention that poor town in PA that starts with an H. Now for something serious, check out Forum 2 and if you could offer something constructive or encourage, see the post "Divine Liurgy in my school" Thanks all, it is now time for all good boys and girls to get back to business. Regarding the fast and chocolate... one source I came across notes that after the Spanish discovered chocolate from the Aztecs... The Spanish rapidly became passionate devotees of the new beverage, which promptly gave rise to interminable disputations between different factions within the church on the vexed question of whether or not liquid chocolate broke the fast- the beverage had become particularly popular in ecclesiastical circles, notably on days when the eating of meat was forbidden. Amando, We lead a deprived culinary existence here in the new world. Cocoa may have originated here, but it took Belgian and Swiss ingenuity to turn it into the treats of God. No to be flippant, but I can picture God relaxing and eating some dark Leonidas truffles right now. It is definitely not the food for the other place that starts with an H . Godiva and Lindt are readily available in my area. Some of the other brands are harder to find. I have bought Hershey's dark from time to time, and my biggest criticism is that it's a bit too sweet. However, I do remember living on Hershey bars and Reese Cups all the way through high school. White chocolate does taste good, but it has none of the health benefits of dark.

Dear Father, Leonidas has a shop here - and their chocolates are certainly delicious. I suppose that Lindt came to mind because their products are rather more widely available (which in itself should have made me suspicious). Since chocolate is a vegetable product, why would anyone think it could break the fast?

Incognitus Perhaps it was due to its "intoxicating" effects.

And here I thought it was because most chocolate products use dairy to make their finished product.

Dark chocolate doesn't have dairy, so I guess it wouldn't break a fast technically. Shouldn't a fast include between meal snacks and desserts though?
