I doubt very much whether the cross shows St Sergei of Radonezh, the patron of my kellion. His beard is completely wrong and he is always shown bareheaded - even in sentimental chocolate box icons. Since the Slavonic is so unclear, I cannot make out who it is, but St Sergei... I think not!

Bless me a sinner, Father Mark! O.K., any bright ideas from yourself as to who it could be? Alex

Dear Administrator, I just saw the new inscription beneath my avatar . . . It should be "YCIX" not "YCE." In any event, I'm happy that our recent conversation about languages in the liturgy has had an impact on your views . . . Alex

Alex,
Given our recent conversations I think I like "євангеліст на канада" better. I almost added "в anhliys'kyy". :p

Bless, Father Mark!
The figure on the back of that Cross is a patron saint of mine, St Alexander Nevsky.
Did you know I'm distantly related to him?

It did occur to me that it looked like the traditional portrayals of him. I'm glad that there has been a return to this iconography of him in the schema - which was banned by Peter 'the Great' in favour of the militaristic 'icon' of the warrior-prince. Spasi Khristos - Mark, monk and sinner.

Bless me a sinner, Father Mark!
Yes, I have an antique medal depicting St Alexander as a warrior-prince and another depicting him as a monk.
As I understand it, his universal liturgical cult is to him as a "Venerable Monk" rather than as a Prince.
But you are a prince of a man yourself!
