Dear all,
I am afraid my "LatinTrad" screen name has lent an unnecessary (and unintended) polemical character to some of my posts. While I am a LatinTrad, I am also a lover of Byzantine liturgy and especially Antiochian music, being a Melkitophile. You may ask how a LatinTrad can also be a Melkitophile. So may I. wink
Any thoughts?
In Jesus and Mary,
LatinTrad (for now)

LatinTrad,

Seeing you are in NY and have that baseball, I pray you are not a Yankee fan.

Dear Latin Trad --
I think it's important not to apologize for yourself when you've done nothing to apologize for -- in short, why change your name, unless of course you wish to be called thus: "LatinTradMelkitophile" which is obviously unreadable ...

Dear LatinTrad,

What you choose to call yourself is strictly up to you. What's the problem with LatinTrad?

Glad to have you here.

Your fellow traveler from the Latin tradition smile

Dear L-T:

Keep your name. Simple as that.

As for the bit about your being a Yankee fan, I think you need the prayers of both Latins and Byzantines.

Recalling fondly the 1908 Cubs, eek

LatinTrad,

For heavens sake do NOT change your name. It is just fine. It tells the world you love your Catholic Church. As a post-Vatican II fellow I guess you love the Traditional Liturgy of the Roman Rite as well. Well, I say God Bless you and keep up the faith!

May God Grant You Many Years!

Brother LatinTrad, one's name is one's name and it may or may not reflect who one is. One can thank one's Godparents for this. But when choosing screen-names, it's a different story. The sobriquet chosen can stem from one's own baptized name, or it can be chosen to reflect one's personal identification with a perspective on the world or the church or whatever.

While I have no personal problem with LatinTrad, I am concerned that it identifies the posting person with a group of "traditionalists", a proportion of whom consider the most recent Ecumenical Council a travesty and the Holy Father a usurper or even the anti-Christ. Thus, when I personally am confronted with the "traditionalist" monniker, I get really nervous.

Secondly, devising monnikers that represent a faction within the church contributes to the fractionalization of the Church as a whole. Much like Nestorian, Arian, Waldensian, Catharic, etc., automatically sets up oppositions that don't really have a value in a widely ecumenical forum such as this. By identifying one's self as a sub-set of the Roman/Western communion, it leaves us Easterns to question why this self-identification is relevant to a BYZANTINE forum. If one is a Roman Catholic, all well and good. Then one should interact with us Byzantines (and other Easterns) as an RC and from that perspective. But when the sobriquet represents a factionalism within the Roman Catholic community, then I question its appropriateness on a Byzantine and Eastern forum. If "trads" have an antipathy to the majority of the Roman Catholic community, then pursue the antipathy in a Roman Catholic forum. But to use the Byzantine Forum as a battleground for RC internecine quarrels is to steal our Byzantine space for non-Byzantine purposes. And stealing is wrong and sinful.

We Byzantines are in a tough spot. We are indeed Orthodox in our spirituality, theology and worship. (The Council affirmed this.) We are also bound to the person of the Holy Father through a faith-affirmation: we believe the Bishop of Rome to be the successor of Peter and the first of the Bishops of the Church.

The last thing we need is to be diverted to canonical and liturgical squabbles within the Roman Church itself. As a 'bouncer' for the "Byzantine Bar", I'll say: "take it outside".

With all the best wishes to both our Orthodox brothers and sisters, and to our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters,

Blessings from the Byzantine Bouncer.

Dear Dr. John,

Shall I consider myself bounced? smile As far as I know, however, none of my posts has addressed RC controversies. confused
