Unfortunate term, but it does describe a definite phenomenon, which includes a good number of my friends, at least one of whom is quoted in the book...

I hate sprawl, but I hate overcrowding even more. There in lies the dilemma.

Great article. smile

The problem today, I believe is not having balance in all things. Even 'crunchy' types often have a balance problem. Some go too much one way, and some go too much the other way. We can still live 'in the world' and assimilate and yet still have balance, integrity, and be beacons of Christian values. What we need to remember is to not be 'of the world'

The ancient Greeks had a saying which is one of the wisest secular sayings of history, and it still holds great wisdom for us in our materialistic, lustful, gluttonish, consumeristic, bigger is better, and more, more, more mentality of today: 'In all things: moderation'.

Just some thoughts...

(and by the way, for some strange reason, the term 'crunchy' reminds me of Nestle's crunch bars...hmmmmmm......)

In Christ,
Alice

Wow...I'm not crazy after all! eek

Okay, I may still be crazy, but at least I know now that I am not alone in the asylum.

The USA is still protestant nation, what do protestants do? They revolt. This is why there are 10,000 denominations. Ever since the US American revolution. US Americans have always been revolting against something or at least pretending to be. The one thing I like about older societies, cultures and nations is that they stay the same over longer periods of time, there is less generation gap. There is orthodoxy and loyalty. If something is broken, we should try change it and not too easily abandon it for something else. Due to technology and wealth, what has been lost in the USA more than anything in my mind is a sense of community, where we know our neighbors and have hometowns and mom and pop stores and businesses. At life's most basic level all we have is community/family, land, home, farming and church/God. If industry should ever collapse or a great depression come, these will be what will allow us to survive.

The USA is an extremely hopeful young nation which does have immense patriotism and reliable work ethic. The economics and loyalty in government and business saves us time and time again. And so I simply hope within time the broader basic culture (which is the family and local community) beyond government and economics becomes more traditional, down to earth, evolving, yet not throwing out babies with the bath water. We should question authority while at the same time acknowledging that authority has a rather good record of doing what is in our interest compared to most other nations. Indeed, Alice, temperance or moderation is such a lovely virtue.

"The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; worship without sacrifice; and computers without technical support from India."- Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

Whats all this talk of American being revolting!!! biggrin As for being a 'young country'. It is older than many countries in Europe and indeed in the world. It has seen them come it has seen them go from the face of the earth. It was young when The most Serene Republic of Venice was disolved, never to return.

Now my country on the other hand is young cool sort of like me  (ok so the hair says NOT).
