Anybody know what the closest Byzantine church to the Franciscan University (Steubenville, OH) is? Is is St. Joseph's in Toronto (OH)? Thanks.

Mrs. H, The closest Byzantine Catholic Church to FUS is in Weirton, WV, a 5 minute drive from the FUS campus. It was at FUS that I was introduced to Byzantine Catholicism. Matter of fact there is a large group from the Trinity East dorm that goes every Sunday. By the way, I too am from Mesa. Do you go to St. Thomas the Apostle Byzantine Church?

Yes! Who is this? My daughter just got accepted there, but unfortunately their early education degrees are not what she is looking for. And the rep said there's no dance program. :-(

We are originally from St. Josephs in Toronto. It is a good church with wonderful people, however, the college kids seem to prefer the Weirton parish. It must be a lot more active now. As 'madefor' said, the Toronto parish is further away and also an older congregation for now. There is also St. John the Baptist in Mingo Jct., which is about the same distance as Toronto, about 15 minutes. Both are under the care of Fr. Andrew Chura.

You probably don't know me. My fiance and I have just started attending St. Thomas and not regularly as we currently have some obligations with our latin parish. However, we plan on becoming members at St. Thomas this summer and becoming more involved there.
It is true that they do not have a dance program. However, they do have regular social dances, including swing dancing every Sunday night.
I absolutely loved Franciscan Univ. and wish I could have finised my undergrad there, but unfortunately I could not and will be graduating this May at Ariz. State with a Finance degree.
Anyways, if you have any questions about Franciscan, let me know.

Thank you for your replies. FUS sounds like a wonderful environment; we're just disappointed that they don't have exactly the degree program she is looking for. She is also a classical ballerina and looking to minor in dance. Her search continues ... "MadeforCommunion," I'm glad you found our church and am looking forward to meeting you. We had our annual Holy Supper Saturday night (95 people!) and the Nativity Pageant, which the kids will do again before Christmas Day liturgy. Have a Blessed Christmas!

Education and Dance?
You could send your daughter to Brenau University in Gainesville, GA - it's my wife's Alma Mater.
Unfortunately, you're a good 45 mins drive to a Epiphany Byzantine Church in Roswell....

The church in Toronto, which I attended a couple of times, years ago, had "Glory and Praise" sort of hymns [!]; the church in Weirton is more Eastern, though they did include the filioque in the Creed... I would, from watching my friends' children, suggest that it is essential to send your kids to one of the few colleges where peer pressure functions to encourage faith rather than to a state or private college where they are likely to be pressured by fellow students and faculty to become pagan. In fact, there is much to be said for getting a good foundation in the liberal arts before concentrating on a specific field of study...quite aside from the incredibly important value of keeping them Christian, even if this means a certain Latin mindset. After all, what is the alternative? Maybe if the new Transfiguration College takes off we won't have to make these hard decisions, but until then, we do the best we can. -D
