On line scanners

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Spyware
Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de/
Spybot search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Spyware Blaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html

Google for" Hijack this" and follow the instructions

Anti Virus

Avast http://www.avast.com

AVG - there is a free AV on this Site http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1

The best advice that I have seen given here in the UK is - if you have a PC get AV on and get behind a Router or get a GOOD Firewall.
Even with those you should still run Antivirus scans, from a programme other than your installed one, regularly and you MUST keep it up to date

Better still than all these [ and it's not an exhaustive list BTW ] is get a Mac - so far OSX in all it's flavours is Virus free , we do not seem to be troubled with spyware either biggrin

As you will gather I am no expert I run a Mac and my husband runs a PC - he gets hit regularly with all sorts of garbage - none serious but always annoying .

I just watch for attempts coming from stuff passed by PCs and am glad that folk consider Macs not exciting enough to try and 'hit'

Apple is going to stop using IBM chips and start using chips from Intel. I wonder if they are going to become more susceptible because of that.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The problems I am experiencing are indeed from something in my computer. I'm using the college library one just now. I've been downloading Spybot all day but it never seems to stop downloading. I'll keep trying and hopefully I'll be back with you soon.

Anheylna,

Most people I know that use mac's are the highly educated types ... engineering & design degrees... etc etc wink .

Guess the idea loses something going trans-atlantic.

Macs have really declined as a percentage of the total computer market. But they are still heavily used and preferred by the graphic design artists and folks in similar fields. The barrier for me has always been their expense and the limited software available for them. I also need compatibility with the school computers where I teach, and they are all PCs. I understand about the dialup connection. I am getting ready to assume the expense of broadband and junk dialup.

actually not... it is the OS not the underlying processor that makes a machine susceptible to viruses.

Lets say you were to get a copy of GEOS (a window like OS that was out way before windows 3.1) and used that, you wouldn't have viruses, because the OS doesn't have the same hooks as Windows.

Also since windows is the OS of about 90% of the computers out there it makes an inviting target.

Also since Bill Gates is an inviting target... Many Virus writers want to "Put him in his place"

I have had really good luck with McAfee VirusScan. It's not free, but has worked really well on my PC.

Me, too, generally. No green words showing up here for me. I hope yours get fixed Dan.
You are doing a great job with the "evangelization" thrust. My prayers for your PC to be okay...

Anheylna,

I know what you mean about "pride" and a "fall" as fell on my face and had to go to emergency while out running twenty three years ago. Ended up with broken teeth and a pretty scraped up face plus hurt my chest. I had tripped on a shoe lace which came untied. Gave me some food for thought as I recovered. Have the crowns on my teeth yet to remind me. Also I was "into" the running too much at that time(training for races, etc.) and not "into" some other things I should have given more time to. I always remember the incident as sort of a turning point and wake up call for me. But that was just my experience...still sometimes I think these things happen for a good reason, but we end up the better through it all. I think I did, but I have arthritis in my knees to remind me of those racing days. smile

In Christ,

Mary Jo
