Dear Friends,
Below is my akathist to Andrew Sheptytsky that I offer here for your review and comments (and suggestions for edits!).
Metropolitan Andrew led the Ukrainian Catholic Church from 1900-1944. From an aristocratic background, he gave up all to become a monk and then rose in the ranks to become Metropolitan of Galicia (with the enthusiastic support of the Pope of the time).
He was an extremely generous man who began the Eastern spiritual renewal of his Church, founded the EC Studites (of which his brother, Bl. Hieromartyr Clement, was the Archimandrite), was the Father of the Russian Catholic Church with Bl. Hieromartyr Leonid Fyodorov as the Exarch, visited North America and Europe where he assisted the EC communities there, and did many other works of God.
He was particularly supportive of married priests and their families. My maternal great grandfather, Fr. Hrynevych, died of pneumonia when he was personally working on the construction of a new parish church. His presbytera, Alexandra (after whom I am named), received a pension from a fund established by Metropolitan Andrew.
During WWII, he and his brother Clement personally saved the lives of countless Jews (he had them dress up as seminarians, for example). He suffered imprisonment and arrest during his tenure and also courageously endured personal illness.
He died on November 1, 1944 after prophetically predicting the resurrection of the Greek-Catholic Church after its communist Calvary. He is widely venerated by many as a saint and a miracle-worker.
In a Toronto parish some years back, a man was diagnosed with cancer. On the Friday before the Monday he was supposed to go in for surgery, his parish prayed for him, invoking Metropolitan Andrew's intercession.
On the Monday during preparatory surgery, an x-ray revealed that the man's cancer was somehow GONE! This was formally submitted to Rome for the Servant of God's canonization process.
Most of the martyrs beatified by the Pope in Ukraine were formed or assisted at one time by the Servant of God Met. Andrew. Met. Andrew chose Patriarch Joseph the Hieroconfessor as his successor.
On a personal note, my great grandfather, Leo, was the superintendent of Metropolitan Andrew's summer residence in the Carpathians. My grandfather, Fr. John, had his seminary expenses (all of them) paid for by the Metropolitan - who did the same for many other candidates. My grandfather received land for a farm for his family (of seven children) from the Metropolitan. My father, while in the seminary, received many kindness from the Metropolitan as well. And, through my paternal grandmother, I am related to the Metropolitan. My family and I owe the Metropolitan much in terms of both earthly and spiritual benefices.
May this humble work help us all to invoke the intercession and heavenly aid of this Servant of God and may the day be hastened when he is formally added to the calendar of Saints!
Holy Hierarch Andrew pray unto God for us!
Alex
Akathist to the Holy Hierarch Andrew Sheptytsky Metropolitan of Galicia
Kontakion 1
To you, our wondrous Shepherd and Pastor of the flock entrusted to you by Christ, do we sing a triumphant hymn of praise in honour of your great sacrifices, tireless labours and constant suffering endured on behalf of our martyred Church. In thanksgiving for your countless, miracle-working intercessions before the Throne of Almighty God in Heaven, we raise our voices in unison to you, crying out joyfully:
Rejoice, O Holy Father among the Saints Andrew, glory of Hierarchs and our miraculous protector and intercessor on earth and in Heaven!
Ikos 1
Many years ago, the Lord sent His Apostle Andrew the First-Called to bless the hills of Kyiv and to foretell the rising up of countless Churches and Monasteries there that would be founded to praise the Glory of the Only-Begotten Son of God. And, in times past, our Lord called another Andrew to appear among us and make firm that same rock of faith and cornerstone of holiness. Awed by the Love for Mankind of our Saviour Who called you and anointed you, we sing:
Rejoice, New Apostle called by the Saviour to His Vineyard!
Rejoice, Holy One on fire with unquenchable zeal!
Rejoice, Man of God, consumed with love for Christ!
Rejoice, Renewer of our Church!
Rejoice, Righteous Shepherd that came prepared to lay down his life for Christs sheep!

Scion of the noble family of Sheptytsky, O our Holy Father Andrew, you sought to follow in the footsteps of your ancestors who served our Church so well as its pastors and hierarchs. Raised in luxurious surroundings from your youth, their portraits that hung in the richly-appointed halls of your familys resplendent home seemed to speak to you about the better part that would be yours and prevented you from being blinded by worldly allures. Surrounded and inspired by the memory of such a great cloud of witnesses to the Gospel of Christ and service to His Church, you sang: Alleluia!
Ikos 2
From an early age, your holy parents John and Sophia imparted to you the spiritual treasury of their deep communion with God and Christ. Their most important gifts to you were signified by their own names, Grace and Wisdom. Filled with both under the tutelage of such devoted parents to whom you were completely obedient, you grew in favour with God and people. Awed by the unknowable ways of God who ordained it so, we sing:
Rejoice, child of God, made noble by Grace!
Rejoice, young servant of the Lord filled with Wisdom!
Rejoice, companion to the Angels glorifying God!
Rejoice, descendant of Hierarchs and Venerable Fathers!
Rejoice, happiness of your ancestor Alexander, founder of Uhertsi Monastery!
Rejoice, pride of Barlaam of Univ and Bishop of Lviv-Kamenets!
Rejoice worthy descendant of Metropolitan Athanasius, builder of St Georges Cathedral!
Rejoice, follower in the foot-steps of Metropolitan Leo, founder of the Lviv seminary!
Rejoice, taking inspiration from Bishop Athanasius-Andrew of Peremyshl!
Rejoice, monastic leader like your ancestor Nikifor of Lavriv!
Rejoice, inspiring your parents John and Sophia with spiritual awe by your virtues!
Rejoice, to whom the Apostolic inheritance of Saints Volodymyr and Olha was handed down!
Rejoice, O Holy Father among the Saints Andrew, glory of Hierarchs and our miraculous protector and intercessor on earth and in Heaven!

You were a brilliant master of secular legal studies, O Holy Father Andrew, but your inward desire was for the Law of God and obedience to the Divine Will. You soon became a pilgrim to monasteries and then finally came to venerate the Saints of the Kyivan Caves Lavra and observe the ways of the great God-pleasers there. Falling down before the holiest shrines of ancient Kyivan Rus, you made heartfelt prayer to God and cried: Alleluia!
Ikos 3
The Holy Miracle-Workers of the Kyivan Caves inspired you on the path that you were to take, Father Andrew, leaving no provision for the flesh, but, instead, putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, invoking His Name continually and serving the Lord with all righteousness and joy! As you opened the doors of your heart widely to listen to and ponder the Word of God in silence, we sing:
Rejoice, New Samuel, exclaiming to God, Lord, speak - for your servant listens!
Rejoice, Lover of the ways of the Desert Fathers!
Rejoice, Venerator of the Saints of the Caves Lavra!
Rejoice, for Anthony the Founder welcomed you to the work of asceticism!
Rejoice, for Theodosius took you under his monastic mantle!
Rejoice, for Nestor the Chronicler sees a new Apostle for Rus in a young pilgrim!
Rejoice, for the Venerable Fathers acknowledge one of their own in you!
Rejoice, for the holy Fasters are overjoyed in the presence of a new ascetic among them!
Rejoice, for the great Saints greet you, as of old, Truly Christ is Risen and so shall His Church be through you!
Rejoice, for you found your soul among the hills once blessed by the Apostle whose name you were to bear!
Rejoice, for the holy city of Kyiv awakens your spirit to the things of God in our Church!
Rejoice, for it is there that you reclaim your patrimony once lost, but now is found!
Rejoice, O Holy Father among the Saints Andrew, glory of Hierarchs and our miraculous protector and intercessor on earth and in heaven!
Kontakion 4
In your travels as a pilgrim seeking the truth, O Holy Father Andrew, you met Soloviev with whom you shared a common vision about the union of the Churches of God in communion with the See of Peter. Praising God for calling you to this task, you cried: Alleluia!
Ikos 4
You were a true Apostle of the unity of Gods Church, O wondrous Hierarch, as you sought to confirm it upon the Cornerstone that is Christ and upon the Rock that is Peter. You saw the Light that comes from the East and fills the entire world, while invoking the Chief Apostles to come from Rome and strengthen us all in the faith. Glorifying God Who appointed you to this task, we sing:
Rejoice, Namesake of the brother of the Chief Apostle, Saint Peter!
Rejoice, for you saw East and West as part of the One Body of the Indivisible Christ!
Rejoice, for you join with Christ in the Garden in praying that all His followers be one, even as He and the Father are One!
Rejoice, for the cause of unity inflames your spirit!
Rejoice, for you dedicate your life to it!
Rejoice, for you are always ready to lay down your life for it!
Rejoice, for you embrace the Orthodoxy of the East of our fathers!

Rejoice, for you extol her great fruits of spirituality and holiness!

Rejoice, for your love for our Church knows no bounds!
Rejoice, O Holy Father among the Saints Andrew, glory of Hierarchs, and our miraculous protector and intercessor on earth and in Heaven!
Kontakion 5
You turned your back on the world and all that is in it, O Holy Father Andrew, rejecting the pride of life and of your own position that you inherited at birth in order to seek out the true Pearl of Great Price that is Christ our God. Taking up the mantle as an ascetic struggler according to the Rules of Saint Basil the Great and of the Eastern Church, you put your hand to the plough of the Way of God without looking back, but, instead, praying ceaselessly: Alleluia!
Ikos 5
Truly did you imitate the rich young man of old who inquired of Christ concerning what he must do to inherit eternal life. But, unlike him, you went and gave away all you had and came to follow the Lord as His disciple forever. Awed by the self-effacing humility of one truly aristocratic in spirit, we sing:
Rejoice, for you gave up parents, and family, and wealth to follow Christ!
Rejoice, for all is vanity and deceit in the world!
Rejoice, for you have chosen the better part that will never be taken from you!
Rejoice, for you have taken up the Cross to follow the Lord Jesus!
Rejoice, for you accept the breastplate of salvation!
Rejoice, for the mantle of Divine protection is placed about your shoulders!
Rejoice, for the Sword of the Spirit is given to you to fight off the darts of the evil one!
Rejoice, for you have the Word of God constantly in your heart, mind and on your lips!
Rejoice, for you ceaselessly invoke the Saviour with the words: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner!
Rejoice, for you prepare yourself to do battle with the enemies of the Church!
Rejoice, for nothing will separate you from the Love of God!
Rejoice, for St Basil and St Josaphat welcome you into their fellowship!
Rejoice, O Holy Father among the Saints Andrew, glory of hierarchs, and our miraculous protector and intercessor on earth and in Heaven!

Recognizing your great gifts of mind and soul, the Successor of St Peter eagerly appoints you to the leadership of our Church, O Holy Father Andrew! With your consecration as Metropolitan, the long-awaited day of its rebirth arrives. With tears, the Archbishop of Mukachevo-Uzhorod, Vladyka Peter Gebey spoke on all our behalf when he saluted you with the words: You are our glory! You are our sun! And we cry: Alleluia!
Ikos 6
Enthroned as Metropolitan in the Cathedral of St George that was built by your very own ancestors, O Holy Father, the people look to you as to another Moses about to lead his Church and people through a difficult desert, pursued by new Pharaohs and their armies intent on their destruction. Through your prayers, we remain calm and, instead, behold the salvation of the Lord from all perils, singing:
Rejoice, who inherited the promises of the First-Called Apostle as leader of our Church!
Rejoice, planting the Cross firmly in our souls!
Rejoice, bearer of Apostolic Authority!
Rejoice, New Moses, destined to lead our Church for more than forty years!
Rejoice, taking us out of the desert of spiritual dryness!
Rejoice, for you will lead us on sure paths!

Rejoice, for your enthronement gladdens all with its bright joy!

Rejoice, O Holy Father among the Saints, Andrew, glory of hierarchs, and our miraculous protector and intercessor on earth and in Heaven!

You were so tirelessly devoted to your flock and its immediate spiritual needs that you well said of yourself, I travel from village to village more like a missionary preacher than a bishop! For which part of our Churchs life did not feel the magnanimous and beneficent reach of your loving and guiding hand, O Father Andrew? Praising God for sending His true worker into His Vineyard, we cry: Alleluia!
Ikos 7
You laid down the firm foundations of a great renewal of our Church by tending to the formation of priests and monastics to serve and guide it into all truth and holiness. You were a true father to priestly families with their presbyteras and children, extending your care to them in all their needs. Awed by the great height of charitable love in this, our bulwark and tower of protection, we sing to the holy Metropolitan:
Rejoice, who nourishes generations of holy and learned priests and bishops!
Rejoice, great supporter of the Lviv Theological Seminary!

Rejoice, O Holy Father among the Saints Andrew, glory of Hierarchs, and our miraculous protector and intercessor on earth and in Heaven!

You resembled the Good Shepherd of the Gospels, Holy Father Andrew, for you not only tended the sheep of your native flock, but also sought out the sheep that strayed far from the original fold, in foreign lands. Travelling to visit these in Europe and North America, the people received you enthusiastically as their spiritual Father who had come to aid and rescue them who were left without guidance and protection. Thanking God for also sending you to the diaspora, we cry out: Alleluia!
Ikos 8
Arriving in North America, you quickly wrote a letter of appeal on behalf of our people and their spiritual needs. You went where the needs of your people was the greatest to do the Will of Him Who sent you, as if saying to you, as well as to St Peter: You will stretch your hands and someone else will bind you and take you where you will not want to go. Praising your readiness to follow Christ in all things, we sing:
Rejoice, inspiration of Vladyka Nicetas Budka, the Blessed New Hieromartyr!
Rejoice, happiness of Vladyka Soter Ortynsky!
Rejoice, amazement of all who met you in North America!
Rejoice, defender of the Greek-Catholic Church in the New Land!
Rejoice, tending to its needs like a vine-dresser tends to his delicate, new shoots!

Rejoice, for we are set on fire with love for our Church and its traditions!
Rejoice, for the flowers you planted in the West continue to point eastward!
Rejoice, for you set their roots firmly in the rich soil of our spirituality!
Rejoice, for you call us to this day to witness to the riches of our Church!
Rejoice, O Holy Father among the Saints Andrew, glory of Hierarchs, and our miraculous protector and intercessor on earth and in Heaven!

At the beginning of the Great War, O Holy Father Andrew, you were called to suffer for the unity of the Church of Christ. Defending communion with the See of Peter, you encouraged your brothers and sisters to remain fast in the faith delivered once and for all to the Apostles. Bowing to the great courage of our Metropolitan, we cry: Alleluia!
Ikos 9
You were arrested, Father Andrew, and imprisoned for your defence of the Church. Nizhny Novhorod, Kursk and Suzdal held your body fast, but your spirit soared upwards to Christ our God Who forsakes not His prisoners. Bearing on your body the spiritual Marks of the Lord Jesus, you continued to pray night and day for the unity of His Church, while forgiving those who imprisoned you. Awed by the magnanimity of our long-suffering Metropolitan, we cry:
Rejoice, Prisoner of Jesus Christ!

You continued to work for the reunion of East and West, Holy Father Andrew, establishing a new Apostolate for this purpose. Chevetogne still boasts the fruit of your ecumenical labours among the disciples of St Benedict. Our Church in South America also received the benefit of your guidance and presence among its children there. You truly became all things to all our people and we sing: Alleluia!
Ikos 10
You endured house arrest and all manner of personal insult, O Holy Hierarch of Christ. Yet you ventured to oversee conferences and congresses abroad as our Churchs ambassador to the world. Your pastoral guidance and charitable care of the Churchs needs continued despite the ravages of the Second World War. Hymning your benevolence toward all, we sing:

The Church that you renewed by your prayer, suffering and good works, O Holy Father Andrew, was crowned with the glory of many New Martyrs and Confessors that carried on your witness to the Apostolic faith of Christ. Inspired by your example, they were imbued with the same Spirit of Truth that led you always to sing, in happiness and in adversity: Alleluia!
Ikos 11
On the eve of our Churchs Golgotha and sharing in the Cross of her Lord, you prayed that no one fail to hold fast to Him Who strengthens all with His Presence and Love for mankind. Thanking God for having sent our Church a new Moses who calls to us to stand fast and see the salvation of God in the midst of the turbulent waves of life, we cry out joyfully:

Rejoice, inspiring all to run the course so as to win the myrtle-wreath of heavenly glory!

Having gone through it with your prayers as its Heavenly Protection, it witnessed the drowning of the new pharaoh and his armies intent on its destruction. Thanking the God of our Fathers who thus ordained it so, we sing: Alleluia!
Ikos 12
Having shared in the Cross of our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, your Church has also shared in the glory of His Resurrection, O Holy Father Andrew! The spires of St Georges Cathedral resound with the joyful ringing of bells and your beloved city of King Leo sings Gods praises in freedom once more. We, your spiritual children, rush to venerate the places where you walked and where the temple of your body reposes to praise God for sending us His Messenger in you. Bowing humbly, we tearfully exclaim:

Prayer to the Holy Hierarch Andrew Sheptytsky Metropolitan of Galicia
Intercede for us, O Holy Father Andrew, that we may be imbued with the Wisdom of God to act always in accordance with the Divine Will and to give of ourselves, as much as we are able, to the service of God, our Church and our people. May we be true bearers of the Spirit for this purpose, inspired by your life, work and suffering, and aided by your constant intercession that we rely on in our daily necessities and the dangers that beset us. Extend your fatherly mantle of protection to all who suffer for their faith even today and bring them release and rest from their troubles. Continually assist your Church throughout the world. Guide and protect our Patriarch (name), our Metropolitans, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Venerable Monastics and all the people wherever they are and in all things. May we be united according to the Will of Christ and ceaselessly praise and thank God for His many gifts to us, and especially for sending us His Servant and Messenger in you, our Holy Hierarch and heavenly intercessor and protector! Amen.

Dear Alex, This is really fantastic. You have done a really nice job. I'm thinking of organizing a special evening in honour of Metropolitan Andrew. Like I did with Patriarch Iosef Slipey last year. Would you by any chance have this Akathist in Ukrainian? I would really like to have it and show it to my bishop for approval so that we could use it. Lauro

Dear Lauro, Yes, I would like to translate it into Ukrainian eventually . . . I want to work on stylistics first of all - any suggestions for improvements? There seems to be consensus that the akathist is heavy on "wonderful historical facts." Alex

Dear Friends,
I've received a great note of encouragement from the Sheptytsky Institute in Ottawa.
But with the proviso that some of the stylistics need to be worked on . . .
So I need your help and advice here, people!
PLease!
Thanks!

Dear Alex,
I'm not too good with things liturgical, but I do want to give you an attaboy!
I'm happy that you remembered our first North American Bishop, Vladyke Sotor Ortynsky, who fel asleep in the Lord March 24,1916.
"Rejoice, inspiration of Vladyka Nicetas Budka, the Blessed New Hieromartyr!

Rejoice, defender of the Greek-Catholic Church in the New Land!"

Alex,
Although words are my currency and have been the mainstay of my professional life for many decades, I am not sufficiently expert in liturgical stylistics to offer any suggestions.
My congratulations though on what, to my very critical eye and ear, is a beautifully crafted Akathist to a man of great holiness.
Many years,
Neil

Dear Friends, Thank you for your kindness! I too think it is a great akathist! I've now found out what "liturgical stylistics" really are all about and see where I can make improvements. I can do these slowly and take my time with them. God bless you all! Alex

Dear Friends,
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank the Administrator and Adam DeVille for their helpful comments on how to improve on this akathist.
I'm reworking it now and will include all of their constructive advice, to be sure!
God bless!
