And we thought our pyrohy were just plain good, now look at this. All they have to do is attend enough church pyrohy sales and they could save us from a flu epidemic. Oh and I know now why I love my sister-in-laws kimchi so much. ... In Minneapolis, after a TV station aired the story about how 11 of 13 chickens in Korea started recovering from the dreaded flu after being fed the kimchi extract, Smith said sales of the Frank's brand in 54 Twin Cities' stores jumped dramatically. http://www.sheboygan-press.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051105/SHE0101/511050316/1062

Oh my, but that brings back great memories of when my mother used to make mashed potatoes, pork chops with sauerkraut/sweet onions. Now I'm too hungry to type more Oh Rose I love pork chops fixed that way. When I saw your post I definately got hungry. This is what has happend for me since I posted the link here, and I sent a note to that paper... Hi, I came across your article yesterday and wanted to tell you what a blessing it has been. I have Reflex Sympathetic Dystropy, Dystonic Spasms, Asthma with Reactive Airway Syndrome. In the month of October I was in the hospital, finished two courses of antibiotics and steriods to try to clear my lungs to no avail. Well, then it hit me, that if it is helping to clear the flu, well maybe it will help me too. As it happened I had a gallon jar of kraut I was going to use to make pyrohy, pedgoies - same thing just different ways of staying it - so I decided to dig into it. Guess what? I am up and dressed and moving about with energy. I had not gotten dressed in three days and stayed in bed. I am even sitting here typing to you, to say THANK YOU. The whezing and congestion is out of my lungs, I can hear, there is a lot less fluid in my ears. I have actually turned off my oxgen compressor, I use two liters when the breathing gets hard. I don't need it today. My sister in law is Korean, and I love her kimchi. So, I guess I will be eating sauerkraut, at least a cup, everyday this winter.

Good for you Rose, For what it's worth, I've come to believe in the "God Diet"... only natural foods - not processed, not packaged, no chemicals - no preservatives. We were all heathier growing up - picked everything out of the garden to cook and only bought our meat and dairy products. My mother grew up on a farm and we were raised on healthy eating. Goodness, the first coke I ever had was when I went to high school. And I was 22 years old when I found out what a pizza was. Glad to hear you're doing better Rose.

Thank God for the blessing your received, Pani Rose. Does cole slaw have the same effect? I make my own (I buy the ready sliced cabbage) and eat it atleast four to five times a week. I know that cabbage is loaded with vitamin C, and that is very good for the lungs. When I was younger I had a chronic cough with wheezing in my chest, (not asthma). After I started taking vitamin c supplements religiously, it miraculously went away. I also started eating more fruits, tomatoes, and miracle vegetables such as spinach and broccoli--the kings of vegetables. I believe that many of us are deficient in vitamins and minerals which either our diets or our food in this country are not fully giving us. Love in Christ, and again, thanks be to Him for your recovery! Alice

Dear Alice,
Actually the article mentioned that it might be the bacteria formed during the fermentation that is helpful in fighting the flu.
Frankly, I love sauerkraut. But it is too sour, so I tend to soak it a little. I wonder if it still keeps it's bacteria?
