This is not a particularly "Byzantine" or "Eastern" question... that's why I posted it in "Town Hall."
I noticed Cardinal Avery Dulles, the American theologian from Fordham University in NYC, at the Holy Father's funeral. He was wearing a miter, as were all the other Latin cardinals.
It was my understanding that when Cardinal Dulles was created Cardinal, he declined to be ordained a bishop, deciding simply to remain a priest. Was this the case? If so, may a Cardinal who is a priest (as distinguished from a Cardinal-Priest) wear a miter?

All Cardinals, regardless of whether they have been ordained to the episcopate, wear the miter as part of their liturgical vesture.

Avery Cardinal Dulles is the convert. His father, John Foster Dulles, was Secretary of State in the Eisenhower Administration.

I've been wondering: why is it "<first name> Cardinal <last name>" and not "Cardinal <first name> <last name>"?

As an aside here I recently learned that Avery Cardinal Dulles is too old to vote in the election. I believe he is 80 or slightly older. He was a college professor before his appointment.
He was especially known some years ago for his book, Models of the Church which we used extensively in training for catechetical work.

If I'm not mistaken, Avery Cardinal Dulles was brought into the Catholic Church by none other than Father Leonard Feeney, formerly S.J., latterly M.I.C.M.
I'm told that some of Father Leonard's followers are still promoting "Feeneyism sine fine", so to speak.

Porter All of those cardinals who are not bishops (eg. priest cardinals, not promoted to be bishops) were only appointed on purpose, after their 80th birthday, so that it would not come up, that there were non-episcopal electors. Cardinal Fr. Spidlik, S.J., is another example.

Dave I think it has something to do with princely titles, like those in europe. Cardinals are like princes.... Albert, Prince of Monaco Ernst, Prince of Hanover William, Cardinal Baum

They do that with Popes who became canonized too, which sounds awkward to me. Like, "Pope St. Pius X" (or future "Pope St. John Paul the Great").

Incognitus Avery Dulles was received into the Catholic Church in 1940. According to one source, his affiliation with Father Feeney occured about a year after his conversion, when Dulles help found the St Benedict Center.
