Christ is risen!

Yesterday, I updated the icon gallery [theologyincolor.com] on my website and added four new images:

Saint John of Damascus (just finished this week!)

A "reverse painting" icon on glass of the Mother of God "Sweet-Kissing"

A woodcut print of Our Lady of Mariapocs

and

An engraving print of Our Lady of Klokočov

Check 'em out!

Dave,
Your St. John of Damascus is very good! You're getting better! Keep up the good work!

Dr. Eric - to paraphrase an old Steve Martin line: "This guy is good". The pictures don't adequately portray even half of the beauty of the original.

Dave's original icon of Hieromartyr Pavel Florensky shown on this page graces our icon corner - and never goes unnoticed by visitors, even non-Orthodox and non-Catholics.

Awesome Icons!

In regards to the Saints Joachim and Anna Icon:
Which Saint Anastasia is that? When did she live?
Which St. Timothy is that? When did he live?
What is the box thing in the doorway?
What does the saying on top translate to?
What is beneath the Cross at the top of the Icon?
What is on the window sill?

It is Saint Anastasia the Great-Martyr of Rome, often called the "Deliverer from Poisons." The GOARCH website [goarch.org] says she died in the year 290.

Which St. Timothy is that? When did he live?
It is the Apostle Timothy--you can read about him in the First and Second Letters of Saint Paul to Timothy.

What is the box thing in the doorway?
The "box thing" is the bed of Joachim and Anna.

What does the saying on top translate to?
What is beneath the Cross at the top of the Icon?
The text at the top of the icon says, in Greek, "I Etoimasia tou Thronou" which means "The Preparation of the Throne" or simply "The Prepared Throne" in Greek. This is a common iconographic subject which shows a throne (the Altar) with the Gospel and the Cross--the objects that have prepared the way for the Second Coming of Christ.

What is on the window sill?
A vase with flowers. There's no theological significance to it: it's just there for decoration. (In icons, sometimes a vase is just a vase. wink )

Why are St. Anastasia and St. Timothy included in the Icon?

Those two saints are on the "Wedding Icon" because they are the patron saints of the couple that was married. smile
