The Sisters taught me that both ways were correct. So one could say "Charles' book" or "Charles's book". It wasn't specific to Jesus and Moses.

Tony: Unless you are some hundred years old, "James's dog" was recommended usage before your elementary education. Forming possesives of singular nouns with "'s" is the first rule in Strunk's "The Elements of Style" (1918) http://www.bartleby.com/141/strunk.html#1

I am not 100 years old but that is certainly what I remember, memory of course being a funny thing. Maybe the teachers were 100 years old though.

If you run a search on "English grammar" in google (or another I am sure) you will come up with many links, I did. If you go through (or should I write thru?) one or more you will likely find what I did. It says both usages are acceptable today.

Dear Tony,

Are you this sharp in your classes at St Vladimir's? wink

Are you preparing to be a Professor, by the way?

Alex,

Dear Tony,

Well, you are sharp, Big Guy, and you'd make a great Professor!

Except for the grammar lesson or lessons, this is a most interesting thread. But I wonder:

WWJD? confused

What would Jesus do? (about all these Churches). What would Jesus say about all these Churches? confused

Maybe, He'd say something like, "I told you to pray for unity?" Well, what do YOU think He'd say? (At least this should get us off the grammar track!)
:p
