Dear Friends, We all like religious "toys!" Some of us are serious collectors too! And I'm going to attend an Orthodox conference here where they'll have a whole room filled with purveyors! (It's hard to believe this is happening to me! ) So what are some of the latest great finds that you've come across by way of religious devotionals and gadgetry? What are the "must-haves" for the serious collector? Let's just put aside questions about liturgical usage, East-West unity and the latest wisdom from Cardinal Kasper! Let's talk about something really important! Alex

Ooh, where to begin? - Hand censer [easternchristian.com] , preferrably with bells.
- One *must* have a complete collection of liturgical books. The serious collector (or the mentaly unstable, depending who you ask) will want these in multiple languages and liturgical traditions!
 - Icons, if one has any blank spots on one's walls.
- Vigil lamps [easternchristian.com] , wicks, etc.
- Incense, of various 'flavours'
- Music, both recordings and sheet music
- If one is interested in baking, bread stamps [prosphora.org] are a must
Now that we've covered the home, shall we discuss what one might want to pick up for your local parish? Σώσον, Κύριε, καί διαφύλαξον ηάς από τών Βασιλιάνικων τάξεων!

I've been wearing a 3 inch Benedictine Crucifix for about 4 years now, but I have yet to find one with a Byzantine cross. That's on my current search list. (Does anyone know if such an item exists?)

Dear DocBrian, Yes, the beautiful Latin tradition of suspending a three-inch Crucifix on a 30-inch neck chain - to make up the number "33" for the years our Lord was on earth! www.istok.net [ istok.net] has some Orthodox baptismal Crosses that are three-inch. But I think the Benedictine three-inch Crucifix is MOST BEAUTIFUL! Good for you for witnessing to your Faith that way! The Cross of St Benedict on the medal, as the Cross Pattee, was used by the Templar Knights and later by the Teutonic Knights. The Ukrainian Orthodox Kozaks, seeing themselves as Orthodox crusaders fighting the Turks and Tatars, adopted that same Cross in white on a red field. The Latin on that beautiful (Greek) Cross doesn't make it any less relevant to the Eastern Church. The Kyivan Orthodox Academy of St Peter Mohyla used Latin as its "lingua franca" for years and even into the 19th century. Also, I believe there is a hierarchy of Cross lengths . . . the one you have is (traditionally) for Benedictine priests and monastics, there is a smaller one for Benedictine Oblates and Benedictine Abbots have one that is six - eight inches long. I know because I have all three! Congratulations, once again! Alex

Dear Kobzar, How wonderful - but my bells aren't as large as those . . . I've a confession to make. When I'm saying the Hours, and when I can, I like to precede them with some bell-ringing . . . I don't limit this to Lent only. And it's interesting to see how the blessing services connect the bells to the brazen serpent raised by Moses in the desert. Of course, the brass neck Crosses made by Orthodox companies are also connected to this and to our Lord's words in Chapter 3 of the Gospel of John. So that rings a bell too . . . Alex

Alex I can't find a link to the 'original' article ( О колоколах и русском православном звоне), but thought you might find this of interest: К Царским Часам бывает благовест обыкновенный в большой колокол, а к Великопостным Часам - благовест постный в меньший колокол. If you wish I can email the entire article to you.
