Dear sister, Pani Rose, in Christ, If a member would show, for instance, only the baptismal name, and the country or the state, would be this unsecure for this member? For example, Thomas from USA, state NM. Or choose any other baptismal name and country and state. Thank you for your answer. Always I find good in your words. Your little brother, in Christ, Marian

One other thing, isn't it easier for us to relate to one another if we use the same "user name" all over? We take Byzcath.org as our "home base." That's why I feel "kinship" with Neil, our "Irish Melkite" brother, who keeps his "name" everywhere he goes. So do I. Stepping on the other's toes is thus minimized, or prevented altogether! Just thinking Amado

Marian,
The use of baptismal names would not work well, as we must have at least 10 Michaels, several posters named John, etc. It would be a bit too difficult keeping track, as, even if numbers were assigned, how does one relate to that person? I hear it now...OK...poster is John10....is he the one I had a run-in with, or was that John9?
More distinctive baptismal names may also lose anonymity...for instance, we have several posters who have said they or family members have several (up to three, I think) saints names as their baptismal names. These are very distinctive, and may actually identify people to someone who knows those names. While normally this may not matter, I am certain that posters commenting about liturgical abuses in their diocese would not necessarily want their bishop knowing just who they are, especially if that bishop is resonsible for the abuses!
This rule holds even more true for our clergy.
Further, we need to remember that we, the members of this forum, are NOT the only people reading! Non-members also read, and there is no way to keep them out. (no practical way, anyhow). I know some of my fellow posters, and they know me...however, I am not at all comfortable with the very real fact that someone unknown may use this forum as a means to cause trouble!
Gaudior, who will remain anonymous, for now!

"Marian " was John Wayne's actual first name. It is very common in Spanish-speaking countries for either men or women to have names that are compounded with "Maria":Jesus-Maria, Jose-Maria..
As far as using screen names, some folks like using them because they can be fun, discriptive, imaginative or let you in on the persons interests. Also it's not a good idea to give out you're full name and location on any forum.

David - you have made a very valid point Also it's not a good idea to give out you're full name and location on any forum. There is also the point that, for some, it takes a long time till they feel comfortable enough to use their own name Also , and I think this , particularly , applies to the clergy here - using a different name allows them to say things freely , whereas if they used their correct [ ie actual ] name they would frequently have to be so guarded that what they said would make very little sense.
