don't think it really matters as to when the story Alex relates took place. I for one refer to Constantinople as Constantinople, not as Istanbul. I also refer to Kaliningrad (named for a monster who tossed his own wife into a Soviet gulag and whose claim to fame consisted of being one of Stalin's toadies) as Koenigsberg (then we can go to Breslau, Danzig, Stettin, etc.) at times I refer to New York City as Nieuw Amsterdam, as my first European ancestors (with my Native ancestors to greet them) came from Holland in 1639 and settled there. oh well, stubborness can be a virtue.

Well, the Odessa I pass is in New York. I think there is one in PA as well, though.

There is one in Nebraska as well.

Quite some time ago on a long-silent thread there was a reference to an American form of Shinto. If anyone can track it down, it might prove to be relevant to the present discussion.

Pennsylvania is the Holy Land, with Bethlehem, Nazareth, Emmaus, and Promised Land, but I have to go all the way back to New York to get near the Holy City, Jerusalem. biggrin Italy isn't too far away, and neither is Naples, but these are nowhere near Rome.

Oh, and on Sundays during semesters, I go to Geneva. I haven't spotted John Calvin yet.

Rome is nearer than you think: just South of PA in Floyd County, Georgia (USA, that is).

Rome is never far away, you know! :p

Dear Amado,

Yes, and I understand that all interstates eventually lead to Rome too! smile

Could you go to the Faith and Worship section to read my akathist to Pope John Paul the Great? Tell me what you think!

Dear Alex:

As a "Latinophile," you know I am not into Akathists! wink

However, I must say that your Akathist to Pope John Paul the Great is beautiful and exceptional!

Amado

(I don't know if it matters but for us Romans the Pope is successor to St. Peter alone. biggrin )

Dear Amado,

Yes, of course!

But an early tradition, one which the East follows, sees the Bishop of Rome as inheriting the position of both "Chief Apostles" Peter and Paul.

St John Paul the Great often had an image of both Apostles on his vestments.

As you know, Peter represents the Universal Church and Paul the Local Church.

Dear Jonn,

Hmmmm...I can only imagine that the U.S. Post Office must have something of a hard time when it comes across your mail! biggrin wink smile

Imagine that - Moscow and Washington - in the same state (or, as we officially refer to it, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania).

Also here - Dallas, Mars, Moon, Apollo, 84, Ohio (Township), Indiana, (North) Versailles (pronounced fur-sales), and one town whose name I will omit.

Indiana University and California University can both be found in Pennsylvania.

Dallas, Texas is named after George Mifflin Dallas of Pennsylvania, Mayor of Philadelphia, US Senator, and 11th Vice-President of the United States.

The state of Wyoming is named after the Wyoming valley in Pennnsylvania.

Pennsylvania could be called the first western state, as it is the only one of the original thirteen states that does not have an Atlantic Ocean coast line.

naaah! I might be stubborn, even a ne American Shintoist (to anticipate what one person mentioned) but a realist, so I grudgingly write the current misnomers as far as addresses go oh, didn't Fromm have something to say abot this subject, the subject being that humankind is tied to the womb, hence we name cities after our birthplaces? just wondering.
Much Love,
Jonn
