Fireworks ban in France

France announced today that it plans to ban fireworks at Euro Disney, following last night's display that caused soldiers at a nearby French army garrison to surrender.

Not necessarily a Francophile, except in a Christian sense, I don't see any point in insulting them. I would like us to remember the:

Contribution to, or rather, their securing of the American Revolution through Lafayette's landings and blockade of Yorktown.

The unsurpassed tenacity of the French at Verdun in 1916 during which ONE MILLION SOLDIERS DIED (both French and German).

The praise of their bravery by US Gen. George Patton during Operation Torch (the US/UK landings in Northg Africa in November 1943).

Their significant later contributions to the allied war efforts in Egypt, Italy, and France.

Active combat participation in the 1990-1991 Gulf War.

Just because their national interest is not our national interest doesn't mean that we need to make them our enemy.

In Christ,
Andrew.

BTW Isn't it comforting to know that the Germans are lecturing us on how we should treat out neighbors. :p

When I read the name of this thread, I truly had to stifle a laugh; I thought you were serious.

It only added to the irony that you turned out to be joking. smile

As we are just now studying World War I in my Modern Civ. class at school (well, I knew most of this already), I find this especially poignant. smile

This is no slight on the French, Andrew. I really don't mean to be uncharitable. Heck, I'm part French! But ya gotta admit...!

The US House of Representative cafeteria no longer serves "french fries". They are now "freedom fries".

I think this talk of "boycott" and renaming things so terribly silly. Can't a sovereign nation disagree with a policy of a particular US administration?? I know many citizens of the US who oppose this policy. I respect the French and many other nations for saying what needs to be said.

Peace,
Brian

Brian,

"Can't a sovereign nation disagree with a policy of a particular US administration?"

No one is stopping them. No one will stop me from laughing at humorous things written about their hypocritical policies either. Nor will anyone stop me from making up some more jokes.

Here's a few more:

"France has neither winter nor summer nor morals. Apart from these drawbacks it is a fine country. France has usually been governed by prostitutes."

--Mark Twain

"I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me."
-- General George S. Patton

"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion."
--General Norman Schwartzkopf

"We can stand here like the French, or we can do something about it."
--Marge Simpson

You would think that jingoistic and nativist sentiments were something new and exciting. It is the same old tired rhetoric. Nothing new here.

The French have been hypocritical with some of their policies, but so has the United States. The hypocrisy of the United States has never made me laugh, but it has made me want to cry.

Gag me with a pitchfork. I heard about this yesterday. Now, don't get me wrong, I love our country, but these kind of subliminal messages and propoganda make us look like the arrogant snobs we are.

P.S.- I think humor is very Christian, so I can understand where Dan is coming from, but let's try not and generalize, at least without making it clear that we are only joking.
