Greetings,

I want to know if anyone knows if there are any Eastern Churches -especially Byzantine ones- near Cancun, Mexico, as I will be spending the first few months of the new year there... I realize that there are lots of Roman parishes, but I just wanted to know...

I am pretty sure you'll have a hard time finding Eastern Catholic Churches near Cancun. The nearest one might be in Florida.

I am unfamiliar with the geography of the Orthodox Church of America in the Yucatan peninsula. They might have a parish or mission in Merida, but that is still quite a few hours driving from Cancun.

I guess that "When in Rome"... If you're visiting Mexico, give yourself a chance to experience Mexican Catholicism, which is at least as Roman as in Rome. wink

Shalom,
Memo.

Hello,
I m not sure of the details, but I think a Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic priest from Passaic retired to that area and is (was) active in 'evangelizing'. His name is Fr.Charles Brown.
Maybe someone else knows more?

Criostor,

There are Eparchies for the Melkites (phone #(5)542-0225)and the Maronties (phone # (5)554-7014) in Mexico but the Melkites only have one parish and the Maronites three, however I don't know where they are at so give them a call.

In Christ,
Lance

Dear friend:

The Orthodox Church here is divided in four jurisdictions:

1. Mexican Exarchate (OCA): The Cathedral-Monastery is in Mexico City, near the Airport and there are small parishes in Neza, Ecatepec, and Chalco (it's like your Bronx of NY wink )
Liturgy is celebrated in Spanish and some Greek (very few).

Tel: 571-1189 and 5-784-5928

2. Moscow Patriarchate: one parish in Nepantla, State of Mexico (not so near Mexico City) and the Liturgy is celebrated in Spanish and I suppose Church Slavonic sometimes

Priest Carlos Chacon
Avenida Barrios 350 Los Reyes
Iztacalco, Nepatla, Edo Mex.,
C.P. 84090
525-319-4758

3. Antiochian Orthodox Church under Metropolitan Antonio Chedraoui, Cathedral of St George in Mexico City (Colonia Roma). Mass (that's the way they call it) is almost always in Spanish and some Arabic (few Greek too)

4. Greek Orthodox Diocese. The Archbishop doesn't recide here if Im not mistaken. The liturgy is in Spanish and Greek. Church of St Sophia, Mexico City.

Byzantine Catholic:

Melkite Eparchy: under Eparch Antonio Mouhana, they have a parish in Mexico City called Porta Caeli (very Eastern name wink ) ans the Liturgy is celebrated in Spanish, Greek, and Arabic. I really liked the time I attended Vespers there (about 6 years ago)

Unfortunately there are no parishes outside Mexico City, except for some in Guadalajara and Monterrey. It is a matter of fact that many Orthodox who do not find parish attend Mass in Roman parishes
