Dear Friends, Our news channels carried the story of the ordination of about nine women priests on a boat floating in the St Lawrence river along the border between the USA and Canada . . . A woman bishop, excommunicated by Rome, performed the "ordinations." There were several married male RC priests in attendance . . . One of the women priests had a set of what appeared to be Buddhist beads wrapped around her left wrist (I'm sure she was imitating the Eastern prayer rope? ). They all referred to themselves as "Catholic priests." At least they want to be in communion with Rome . . . Alex

Alex, Wasn't this story "floating" around about a month ago? "At least THEY want to be in communion with Rome." You rascal! Dan L

Dear Antonius, We live in a day and age when excommunication doesn't mean very much. In former times, an excommunication could mean loss of a throne, loss of livelihood etc. Today, if you're not excommunicated, you're not with the "in crowd" Alex

Nevertheless, unless I am mistaken, taking part in an illicit "ordination" carries the penalty of automatic excommunication. -Daniel

Dear Daniel:
Just a clarification, these ordinations were not just "illicit."
They are outright invalid!

Amado is quite correct - a woman cannot validly be ordained to the priesthood. For that matter, a man cannot become a mother.

Dear Incognitus,
A man cannot give birth to a child.
But a man can indeed be "motherly" and "nurturing" to a child - sometimes more than a woman can!

Alex "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!" Luke 13:34 (NIV)

I'm just amazed (and grateful) no religious sisters were involved. Usually you see Sr. Wanda B. Priest out there protesting for the "right" (and the "rite") to be ordained. Looks like it was purely a lay enterprise - and still is!
Gordo :p
PS: One of the womyn in this ceremony comes from Red Wing, Minnesota. There was a write up on her in last Sunday's paper. It is a shame that she feels that this was the only way she can serve Christ and the Church. Certainly it is clericalism run amuck!

Relativism at its best. I am a priest because I say so. What petulant children we are.

Dear Friends, Be against womyn priests if you must! But the jury is still out on the validity of my internet consecration of Phil Mor Ephrem as Catholicos of New Orleans and the entire Southwest! Alex
