CIX!
Dear Chaps,
I may be off to Romania on a Orthodox pilgrimage for 2 weeks, and then spending a few days in Bucharest. Can anyone suggest sights to see and places to visit?
In Domino,
Edward

The villages.
You'll catch on from there.
Prepare for some strong drink.
Oh yes, and don't let the word "Budapest" escape your lips. We were almost accosted here in Canada by a Rumanian when my parent made the mistake of confusing one with the other.

Greetings,
As one who has traveled through Romania extensivly, there are many mnay beautiful things in Bucharest for you to see. I would reccomend the Peasant Museum, it is great. Also the art museum at the old palace is wonderful. Get the Lonley Planet Travel guide, it is great for the country and tells you what to see.

Dear Edward,
The Monastery of St John of Suchava is excellent!
My ancestors made annual pilgrimages there in honour of the Great Martyr John whose feast in on June 15th.
This is also where St Paissy Velichkovsky visited and he also stayed at Dragomirna Monastery and was the Archimandrite for Neamtz Monastery where there is the wonder-working Icon of Our Lady of Neamtz.
I will gladly pay you three or more times of what it would cost for a small copy of that icon, if you should be there. . . sniff . . .
God bless!
Alex

Probably too late, but there are many wonderful little churches all over Bucharest, some of them hidden from view by Ceaucescu's ugly buildings. You can stroll around for hours just popping into churches, and you'll be surprised at how many people are in them, venerating icons and the like, during the course of the day in Bucharest.
The other "highlight" is the Northeast -- Iasi and around, and the painted monasteries of Bukovina.
Enjoy Romania. The food is wonderful and there are many interesting people there. But be careful as well --- it is, in many ways, quite a rough place these days.
