You may be correct. It is true that many of our members are converts but still over half can trace their anscestory back to Western Pa. and from that to Eastern Europe. Never have I met an unlikeable person and I've been attending for nearly three years. It's a glorious group of people.

Dear Dan,

The Senator John Heinz Regional Museum has a site that might be useful to you. It covers Western Pennsylvania. The url: is www.pghhistory.org [pghhistory.org]

I'm not sure how much it has on specifically Eastern Christians, but given the number of Eastern Catholics and Orthodox in the region, it should have some.

In regard to Carnegie, he and Frick and other industrialists have come to be known as the robber barrons. The history of the relationships between the industrialists and the mill workers, including many with Eastern European roots, is a mixture of ill treatment and philanthropy. The famous Homestead Riots are part of this history. Our Slavic ancestors and the other steel workers endured much.

Ironically, there is a Ukrainian Catholic Church, Holy Trinity, in the small town of Carnegie. The town is just two hills over from the Point in downtown Pittsburgh.

Perhaps a search of the net for information on the robber barrons and the riot will yield some information or links to sites that will.

Hope that this is useful. If I can be of further help, let me know.

Dan,

You can check closer to home. Talk to the Priests in Indiana they can direct you to some folks who worked in the steel mills in Gary ,etc. I don't know too many folks who are left in South Chicago. Those mills closed in the early 80's. US Steel, Wisconsin Steel, I'm not sure about Republic Steel.

Steve and Bridgett,

Thanks for the tips. I have much research to do.
